I have been searching for a room during Ithaca move in (August 21, actually) and it has proved impossible to find a place that will take a reservation for one night.

Any advice or proven workarounds on this for those of who are new to the area?

Hmm…You’re trying to find a hotel to stay in? Yeah…hotels book up REALLY fast during move in, and unfortunately, the rooms cost an arm and a leg as well. I just searched on hotels.com for that night, and there are a couple of options available in Ithaca. It is cheaper if you book for a couple nights rather than one

DS recently graduated and I said for 4 years if I only had money to start a big business I would open a new giant hotel in Ithaca. This was really problem for us over the years. They really overcharge you for the stays at places that are not all that nice.

We stayed in Cortland a few times, it’s not a bad drive. Also check in Owego about 30 minutes away depending on the direction you are traveling from. Might check Elmira/Horseheads too.

We stayed in Owego before our Cornell college tour a few years ago. It’s a small town, but much closer than Endicott (where we once lived) or Binghamton.

There are many beautiful campgrounds near Ithaca too. Maybe sleep in the car? (I know there’d be no room for camping gear on top of the college gear.)

Did you try some of the lesser known places like Taughannock Farms Inn? It’s in Trumansburg, a town that’s north of ithaca, but in the general area. Cortland is about 20 minutes away and there are other towns about 1/2 to 40 minutes away. If you haven’t found anything yet, I’ll send you some links.

I did find a place where the nightly rate is cheap enough that it will not break the bank to stay for two nights - Log Country Inn - about 12 miles from Ithaca.
