Impressed with Jesuit Universities

My son has been accepted to 4 Jesuit Universities (Xavier, St. Louis, Marquette and John Carroll) and is waiting to hear from a 5th. Our experience with these schools has been outstanding! He was offered generous merit packages from all four and has offers to compete for additional scholarships as well. The admissions offices have been in contact and offered several opportunities to visit, shadow, go to games, etc. The students are friendly and welcoming...I can't say enough good things about these colleges! There are 28 Jesuit Universities in the US, so if the other 24 are as wonderful as these four, then it would be worthwhile to check out these schools.

I would be interested in hearing CC feedback about these and other Jesuit Universities.

My older sister attended College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and loved it.

Oh My Gosh! College of the Holy Cross is basically my dream college.

Georgetown, Boston College, Fordham, and Holy Cross all have very beautiful historic campuses and are among the oldest Jesuit colleges in the nation. Georgetown is the oldest Jesuit and Catholic college in the US and Holy Cross is the oldest Jesuit and Catholic college in New England.

I'm seriously considering Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY for next year.

It's one of the 28 Jesuit schools, and there's definitely still the large Jesuit influence there. I was offered a good scholarship, and have been invited to an information session and overnight, and I've had lots of contact with the admissions office and they have been great.

It's the only Jesuit school I applied to, but if I were to go back, I might look at/apply to more.

I really like their ideals and teaching style.

SingDanceRunLife: The warmth and friendliness of the admissions office at the Jesuit schools my son is looking at (not to mention merit aid) is attracting our interest as well. I think at this point you should look at every opportunity you have very seriously. The emphasis on being a man or woman for others and service is appealing and seems to be universal among the Jesuit schools. What field of study are you hoping to pursue?

HeartArt, my family has has the same experience with Loyola New Orleans and Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. Excellent merit aid, professional admissions staff, well rounded education -- cura personalis.

HeartArt - I'm looking to go into nursing. And at this point in time, I'm almost sure that I'll be going to Le Moyne next year. If I like it when I go on the overnight, that's my school.

SingDanceRunLife: Congratulations on all your acceptances! I hope that your visit to
Le Moyne helps you make your decision. Nursing is a honorable career and with all the hard work you have put into your college applications, you will no doubt be very successful. Your family must be proud!

HeartArt - Thanks! That's very sweet of you.

I got accepted into Creighton University, in Omaha, NE and it is my number one school. It's a well balanced sized Jesuit university (about 7000 students). Like the other jesuit universities, CU is warming as well in encouraging students to apply with no pressure of religion, and campus atmosphere in general, and the campus is beautiful. A lot of the students who go there currently are from all over the U.S. I'm excited about this school and I hope your son will find the same promises with the school he chooses.

Our son graduated from St. Louis University and he loved it. He has a great job now and we had a very great experience with SLU. So much so that our daughter may go there as well. She is between SLU and Gonzaga and also applied to BC. She didn't want to follow in his footsteps but after doing a summer tour of schools agreed that those schools offered so much. We are definately going Jesuit again. High quality, great values and great campuses.

We just returned from a wonderful visit at Saint Louis University this past weekend. What an incredible school! I am glad to hear that your son had a great experience there. All the Jesuit schools we have visited have been amazing, but there is something really special about SLU. I think it my son's current favorite. We are also waiting on BC and some other schools, but I would not be surprised if he ended up joining your daughter in the freshmen class next fall. What did your son study and what were his best (and worst) experiences at St. Louis?

I've decided on attending Le Moyne next year. I had a great experience with the overnight/day visit, and I was already fairly sure that's where I wanted to go.

SingDanceRunLife: Congratulations! I know from your previous posts that you had many choices and I hope the Jesuit experience will live up to your expectations. My son and I just visited St. Louis University over the weekend and both of us fell in love with it. We met many nursing/PT/premed students who embody the idea that medicine is not only a career, but a vocation. He wants to attend medical school someday, so I am thrilled that he is looking at Jesuit schools. Best wishes to you as you finish high school and move on to college! I believe you will have great success.

Thank you!

He majored in aviation science at Parks College at SLU and he really enjoyed the weekend things they did around St. Louis, such as concerts under the Arch, Forest Park, all the social things at the museum on weekend late nights. He said they did a lot on campus too but it was great having fun things to do around them. He did not go Greek but said if he had to do it again he might. He had a great internship with a major airline while at SLU. I hope you guys find just the right fit for your son. Our son lived off campus at Lindell towers for one year and rented a house with other students senior year. The way the financial aid package is structured now, it appears to get the most benefit you have to live on campus all 4 years. He said he knew a lot of people who did that and they were fine with it. He and his friends are still getting together back in St. Louis every couple of months. Maybe we will see you there!

Swardzinski: Thank you for sharing about your son’s experience at SLU. My son is trying to decide between St. Louis and Marquette right now and we think they are both fantastic schools. I agree that being close to a city offers much to do both off and on campus. St. Louis seems like a lively place! I am not sure if he will be interested in going Greek either…he is very social but doesn’t care much for the excessive drinking aspect of some fraternities. Greek life seems a bit understated at SLU compared to other schools.

Congratulations to your son on all his achievements! You may very well see us on campus next year. I would be extremely happy if he chooses to attend Saint Louis University.

I have been accepted to Fordham and John Carroll. Does anyone have any experience with John Carroll??? what are the plusses and what re the minuses - thanks for any input

Yes, the Greek thing was not a big deal. There was a really good group of students there. we were always really pleased with the atmosphere.
