If anyone wants my socials, feel free to dm me! I’m a current junior for anyone who didn’t see my earlier post.
@jaden12161 I skipped 9th grade to go to IMSA, and I haven’t had any social issues. If you think you can handle the academics and you’re responsible enough to handle residential life, you should be fine with the social aspect. Most people won’t be able to tell you’re a schmen (we call people who skip 9th schmen here) unless you tell them, one year doesn’t actually make that much of a difference imo
For people asking about placement tests - don’t worry about placement too much, they’re just to make sure you’re in a class that fits your skill level. If you’re determined, you can find the IMSA MI math curriculum online to get an idea of what’s covered in each level, but again cramming too much can be detrimental if you end up in a class that’s too high level for you.
It’s pretty hard to test out of science classes, and IMSA SI classes go quite in-depth so I think it’s beneficial to take them anyways. You’re not allowed to test out of biology because they used to let people do that, but everyone who did ended up doing badly in higher level biology classes. I personally tried to test out of physics and failed since my earlier classes didn’t cover enough.
Okay, thanks for the information! About the one year deferral, is it possible to ask the admissions board to let me take a gap year or will I have to reapply.
@0chotona1liensis i have no idea how to dm you but id like to talk to you about the school
@0chotona1liensis I also don’t know how to dm on this site, but if you can dm me first I have a couple questions about imsa
@jaden12161 I believe they’ve stopped accepting deferrals, but you should probably ask admissions directly because that was only changed in the last couple of years and I don’t know the current policy.
@jaden12161 I personally would go if I were you. If you can handle the academics, and they wouldn’t let you in if they didn’t also think you could, then it’s an amazing opportunity. Also, I’ve been told by IMSA students that it’s a really great social environment. You would probably be able to get along fine - and if you want to get to know people before you commit, it’s really easy to talk to other people who got in for next year.
@CoDeR360 Yes, that is what an 8th grade interview basically is.
@jaden12161 Personally I don’t think you should go as a schmen. I would wait a year to get an actual high school experience, and when you apply next year you obviously have an amazing chance to get in. You can contact them about deferrals too. A friend of mine went to IMSA as a schmen and said that they regretted it because they felt out of place being younger than everybody and missed out on a “real” high school experience. There’s no rush to get to IMSA early.
I just got home from school and I haven’t gotten my decision letter!! I’m literally freaking out!! I am wondering if IMSA didn’t look at my application!
Chin Up @AlanLuo - My daughter was wait-listed a year ago this month, too. She’s just about to finish up her Sophomore year at IMSA. We had to wait until almost August before she got the call offering her a spot in the class of 2020.
Keep making plans for both opportunities in your life - going onto the challenges of IMSA -and- staying at your home school and excelling there!
And, try to keep yourself distracted until school starts in the fall. Maybe take on a new hobby or a new volunteer opportunity
@scrunchies
There is no ranking on the waitlist, from what I understand. When a space comes open, the director of admissions looks at all of the same-gendered waitlisted students and tries to find the student who best matches the student being replaced demographically and academically. Then, gives them a call!
I just got my decision, and I got rejected. But, on my letter it invites me to schedule an appointment with an IMSA admissions team member to discuss my application. Is this the 8th grade interview?
I haven’t gotten my letter yet, what should I do? Am I rejected? Help me, please!
What is he eigth grade interview? And don’t feel bad— apparently only 16 out of the 132 eigth graders who applied got in.
When will my letter come?!!! Everyone in my community I know of got their letter.
How did you know the stats about the eighth graders?
The letter will come. I would be worried if it doesn’t come in the next week, tbh. You can only be accepted, waitlisted, or rejected with the letter. No letter doesn’t mean rejection.
(Other people, correct me if I’m wrong but) an eighth grade interview is when IMSA asks to interview you (if you’re in eighth grade) and didn’t get in. I would say the interview is a good thing to show they’re interested in you and should you apply again next year as a freshman, you would have a very good chance of being accepted.
Thanks, birdie02, I am just skeptical about this particular scenario. In my mind, I envision everyone who receives the mail first get accepted or waitlisted. Then the people who get the letter later gets rejected…
I contacted IMSA yesterday and they confirmed that I received the 8th grade Interview! I am so happy!!
