IMSA Applicant Class of 2022

Hello,

My Son is rising freshman and he is interested applying in IMSA.
At 8th grade he has taken a SAT test and he secured 1350 score.
Is that good enough for an Indian American? should he try to improve the score?

His ECs are:
Mathlete - 3 years
IMSA Stem School - 1 year
STEM related after school activities via School - 3 years
Plays competitive Soccer

@blessed101

he should probably try to retake the SAT and score higher but it is possible to get in with that score

@PhoenixRises

It depends more on what your subscores are than your composite. A 1340 could be a really high reading and low math or vice versa, which would look very different to IMSA.

thanks @7bean3

@7bean3

I got a 690 in math and a 650 in reading, I’m taking the second practice test today though, and I’ve studied a lot more. I hope to see improvement in my score, since this time I’ve actually prepared.

Is a 1350 on the SAT good? Also, i have kept a 4.3 for the last two years. So if i keep that up could that present me as a better candidate in the GPA game. For extracurriculars, I’ve narrowed down my options and decided to full on do debate, student council, scholastic bowl, and math team. I’ll try and dive into these as much as possible and try to still have good grades. I know someone who is a senior at IMSA currently and she said I should have all my grades above an A. Also, are my classes even good enough for an IMSA application? They are ACC Bio, ACC Alg 2, ACC english, AP World History, Spanish 2 ACC, and Orchestra. I’m going to mention this but its probably irrelvent and I dont know if they see this, but my STAR reading score (everyone at my school takes this) is 1313 out of 1400. by acc i mean accelerated which is equivalent to honors.

@vb2004

A lot of my friends at imsa got sat scores in the mid to low 1300s, so I think that is okay. Your gpa definitely sounds good, and so do your current classes.

Hey all! I was also accepted for class of 2021, and I found this website really useful, so I can also help with anything y’all need!

I also got accepted last year, and this website really helped me out. I feel that it is important to stress that IMSA looks at more than just your SAT scores. I got in with a 670 in reading and a 660 in math (4.0 GPA), so for me, I’m pretty sure that it was my essays and teacher recs that helped get me in. My advice is to spend ample time on your essays, and to pick a good person for your optional rec. (I picked my old robotics coach who I had known for 4+ years, and while he didn’t tell me what he wrote about me, he said that he made me look very good, so that probably helped with the application too).

I would definitely say that essays are on of the most important things. I got in with a 1340 SAT, 4.0 gpa in all honors and AP classes, a lot of extracurriculars, and (I’m assuming based on what the teachers said) great recs. I would say the most important are the good teacher recs and showing how dedicated you are through your essays. A note about the essays, administration told us when we were applying to make the essays stand out, so I didn’t write a traditional style essay, but rather something unique. It’s more of a gamble, but if you execute it correctly it should work in your favor. Also keep in mind it is a lot less competitive for girls than boys, so that plays a role.

Hey, do I even have a chance of getting in? Throughout 7th and the first semester of 8th grade I slacked off and didn’t care about anything but in the second semester, I picked up my slack and had a completely different view of school and that’s visible in my second semester grades, and I’m about to enter my Freshman year of high school with the best possible classes. If I get straight As and maybe a B in AP Human Geography, do I have a chance?

I have four months to prep till my final SAT exam (i’m taking two or three since there isn’t any limit), and based on Khan Academy practice tests, my Math is exactly a 700 or around (690 maybe, but I scored a 700 in my most recent), and around a 650 in Reading and Writing, so my skills are evident.

Additionally, I’m planning on joining the math team, engineering team (I have a big interest in Robotics), Geography Club

@amreim I would have to say at that point you have a chance of getting in, I would just make sure your essays are good, and your teacher recs are good. Make sure in the optional statement you tell them about what changed your view in a way that makes you look good

@amreim

I think you do have a good chance of getting in, especially if you do what @just_try said and make sure to explain what changed and that you value school a lot more now. Also, if you try to get a fourth extracurricular that could make up for previous bad grades, that might be a good decision. If I remember correctly, the application lets you list up to four extracurriculars.

Hello, I am a current IMSA sophmore, ask me anything about the application process and IMSA in general!

I kind of have a similar story to the previous applicant. I had bad grades throughout 7th grade and the first quarter of eighth grade. In the last three quarters, I did way better, my GPA was 3.6, 3.76, and 3.93 and I graduated 2nd in my class with a 93 percent overall percentage. Will my bad grades make me look terrible in front of the admissions officers? If I get all A’s(not a-'s, all a’s) in ACC Alg 2, ACC Bio, ACC English, ACC Spanish 2, Orchestra, and AP World History do I have a good chance even with my previous bad grades? I have about 3 months to prepare for my SAT. In June, I took a practice SAT on Khan Academy and got a 1200(600M,600R) and now I have a 670 in Math and a 650 in reading. If I get my math to a 700, will that make me a better candidate? Also, I’m in the Gifted Lyceum program at my school which is a class for the top 5% of my school.

For extracurriculars, do they want STEM based activities? I’m doing debate team, math team, scholastic bowl, and am a student council representative. Also, I’m working on a start-up company outside of school w/ a couple of people. We have investors ready to invest in our company so I guess that is kind of successful. Are my eextracurriculars god or should i change some of them to be more STEM based?

I lack A LOT in achievements. I got 2nd place in regional spelling bee and top 10 in state spelling bee. I also got a presidential academic award. I also got one Noetic medal for mathematics. As for academics. I got awards for a perfect english ACT Aspire score. Also, I got awards for scoring in the 95th percentile on math and science. Besides that, not much. I prob will get some awards for debate and math team as my school has a history of success and we have great coaches. Also, I skipped a grade if that matters.

Oh i forgot to add that i won 1st place in both science fairs in my school

@vb2004 same kind of thing, you have a chance, just explain it in the optional statement and make the rest of your app the strongest it can be.

@just_try what mathematics class did u take when u applied?

@vb2004 I had taken up through precalc, but it didn’t really matter since my school did department created curriculum, so it wasn’t accurate.

@just_try how much homework do they give on average? I heard that sophomores don’t get an overwhelming amount but juniors and seniors have TONS of coursework.
