For me I actually had to stop everything since I did a lot through my school and they shut down EVERYTHING and didn’t let us host Zoom extracurriculars. I had to stop basketball for obvious reasons and I couldn’t do robotics or the math team this year. To make up for it though I ended up doing 3 STEM league programs at IMSA in the summer of 2020. My symphony orchestra shut down which was a big deal for me because I got first chair and they haven’t restarted it yet which sucks. My school just restarted track though so I am currently doing that.
That sucks so much that zoom extracurriculars were shut down… Also, although I don’t know much about IMSA application either, you shouldn’t sweat too much. From what I’ve seen on reddit and past forums, SAT doesn’t really matter (also, is your score 1260 or 1360 cuz your numbers don’t match). Also, focus on doing extracurriculars long-term, and don’t do too many either, try to get leadership positions instead. For your math class, are you taking Honors Geometry or Algebra? I was in Honors Geometry in 8th grade, but so did everybody else that I know who was accepted, so if you’re not taking Pre-Calculus, don’t sweat.
Oops yeah sorry I made a typo its 1360 lol. Also yeah most of the extracurriculars I did I did for over 5 years so it really sucks that I kind of have to take a one year break. Also I forgot to mention I have a leadership position in my volunteer group I started and I have over 100 hours of volunteer hours from that, and I used to run my school’s food pantry. I just kind of hope most things get back to normal soon enough, and I’m not too worried about this year since I’m in 8th grade. I’m in accelerated geometry (my school doesn’t offer honors) but I have a B in it so I am a little worried about that. I’ve just always been stronger in algebra lol. Other than that I have all As though. I am really confident in my essays though and I met with a lot of past alumnis and such to help structure it better, but I don’t know if that alone is gonna improve my chances. I know IMSA focuses on essays a lot, but I don’t know how well they are gonna be able to carry my application
(edit: I’m taking honors bio through Northwestern and I have an A in that, so hopefully it makes up for my B in geo)
does anybody know about any boarding schools (either public or one that offers scholarships) that I can apply to other than IMSA as a student in Illinois? a bit off topic but one of the main reasons I am applying to IMSA other than my interest in science is because I need to get away from my home environment
Ask @spam101 - he got into Lakeforest Academy or something through financial aid. Also a little something - A History of IMSA Admissions – The Acronym | IMSA's Official Student Newspaper
If you scroll to the bottom, you can kinda see that SAT doesn’t really signficantly change your chances, but GPA does for sure - or its just 8th graders who were super smart but got rejected
I have a 4.0 GPA but there’s people in my school in algebra 2 while I’m in geo, idk if this changes anything
Try typing " IMSA review committee ", and click on the admissions policy one.
It says they don’t give extra weight to honors or accelerated classes because of district-to-district variance.
Would it end up affecting the geographic variance though considering we live in the exact same area?
I don’t understand what you mean… just look at the admissions policy pdf. What math class you’re in doesn’t affect anything. Geography does though
covid-19 (out of all times) had to happen to me freshman year. I tried to stay involved online, joined a few clubs and continued music lessons/performances and so forth…but I really didn’t do as much as I wanted to this year. right now I have a position in my school’s culture club, and normally that club revolves around field trips and experiencing new culture and food, but obvious that couldn’t happen this year. but since club meetings are on zoom I was actually able to host breakout rooms with foreign exchange students. the other day I was able to talk to some new students from Lebanon, Poland and Georgia so that was cool. so while covid has taken away a lot of the in person experience, the online environment gave me a lot of room to explore a bit.
It affected it really bad. My dad has an underlying health condition which made sports a big no no. No science olympiad, no robotics, and basically a lot of other clubs i wanted to try out.
Hello I am a current freshmen that applied this year and although this may be a bad time to ask this question with admission entries around the corner are there any IMSA graduates or current IMSA students that can describe their experience? I know this question is very subjective and every person has their own opinion about IMSA but what is the overall consensus? I’ve seen many students talking about the terrible staff and in consideration of student health but also how if you look past these things you MAY find what you are looking for. Overall still not sure about IMSA.
Sounds like a question for the IMSA reddit forum (make sure you don’t search the racing car IMSA). Reddit has more former/current students
One more week until decisions are posted!
Do we check it through the portal online?
Also, what time do results come out?
Yeah we check it through the online portal on May 1st. I am not sure about the timing though, it wasn’t specifically listed but the results might come in the afternoon or morning.
don’t decisions come out on may 3rd? i think they sent an email a few days ago
I didn’t receive any email…
they said it in the admissions news. here they wrote this

Oh they’re doing an online portal now??? I really liked the letter thing they’ve done in years past and usually those decisions are mailed out today or tmrw, but good luck everyone! I’m a current IMSA student who’s pretty knowledgeable about admissions so if you have any last minute questions I can help!!!
