Because US News & World Report rankings are not that precise. The difference between 4-10 is negligible and most schools fluctuate a lot through the years for no discernible reason. UChicago has jumped like 15 spots in the past two years or so for no particular reason.....

Well, Duke is still an academic beast...

There is no difference among the top 10...hell probably the top 15...

I really like this post, thanks! Haha Caltech zooming to number 1 in 2000. It must have been the Y2K bug, they hacked it!

(It's a joke guys, don't take it too far)

USNews should rank schools on a weekly basis, like the AP for college basketball.

"Aww it looks like Harvard got another idiot speaker. That's definitely going to hurt them in the seeding." -ESPNU

duke is more of an academic beast than ever before.

Er, what chart are you looking at? The lowest UChicago has been ranked in those years is 15th.

You're right, my mistake. I had thought I had heard they had a crazy jump, but I guess it was only 6 spots in one year. Perhaps I was thinking of some other school...in any event, there are still too many fluctuations that it brings into doubt the precise nature of the rankings. I still stand by that.

Caltech jumped 18 spaces from 21 to 3 in the '88-'89 year.
