IN America, It's now cool to be smart. But not to work hard.

I feel that a font for sarcasm would be slightly more refined.

… i don’t really understand why that would bring up pornographic images either…

I imagine it must be the word “dripping”; try searching with SafeSearch on.

Possibly something more like this: http://www.dreamstime.com/dripping-font-thumb15575228.jpg

Its still not quite the perfect font though.

Safesearch On is for ponies.

I didn’t say I was bothered by the pornographic images. I was just surprised.

I’m the same way but it’s definitely nothing to be proud of.
There will be a time when you encounter topics in under/grad school that are extremely hard…if you dont know how to study or arent used to working hard, you’re going to fail. that’s guaranteed.

This is why i didn’t debate. No one wins the Natural smarts Vs. Work ethic argument.

Thread is pointless…

But Daxlo5, my point isn’t just Natural smarts Vs. Work ethic . It’s that, here, in America. People respect smarts but not hard work. Its that if I say I didn’t study but Aced the test people think I rock but if I carry ten books home and study my head off people roll their eyes and yell grade grubber. It’s that in the first few years of high school, work isn’t hard enough. Social Studies classes where you can get As by just being in the class or Enlgish classes where you literally don’t need to know anything or can spark note the chapters before the test. For America in general, we need to give kids hard, more challenging work. Schools should allow all students to take AP classes freshman year, classes should focuses on understanding of the material and not just rote memorization. Our generation needs to be challenged because it is terrible to get to senior year and realize that you know need to learn how to study.

Thats my argument Daxlo, its not just smart vs. work hard( though that is a part of it)

It’s not that Americans don’t respect hard work, it’s that there’s a romanticism about carefree childhoods. On the whole, people don’t think kids should be bogged down in school work.

You have 50 years after college to work as hard as you like. But it would be a waste to do the same in the 10 years before college.

People usually pursue the American dream after childhood. But then again, the homework amount has risen in the past few decades and shows no signs of stopping.

Seems to have risen in High School and have dropped in college with exception of some top schools (particularly smaller research Us, LACs, and engineering schools). This why many actually think college is easier, though admittedly exams are typically a lot tougher, you have significantly more time to prepare for various reasons.

THe whole idyllic American childhood is a lovely idea. BUt the truth is, Americans can’t continue to enjoy idyllic childhoods when we (as a nation) are competiting with so many other countries. I think the idyllic American childhood idea is part of the problem. People expect to “lear” , “grow” and “develop” in High school. Complete nonsense. IN reality, high school should be a time for grinding down and learning all the basics of stuff. Because of this idyllic, lackadaisacal high school dream, those who study hard are scorned and harder clases are introduced later instead of earier.

I have less respect for people who work crazy hard in most of my classes because most of my classes are pointless. I spend 260 minutes in AP Lit every week. During those 260 minutes, I will learn absolutely nothing of any value whatsoever from the curriculum. Messing around in class actually yields a higher probability of some sort of interesting educational experience. If we talk about doing homework, the situation is exacerbated because there are more options for how I can spend my time.

What are “the basics of stuff” and why are these things we need to know?

What makes a class harder vs. easier?

What is the actual tangible benefit to working harder?

What?

Not really.

Yes, we should take Calculus, then Algebra.

A girl near the top of our class was complaining about another girl in the top ten percent of our class. Her gripe… So and so isn’t really smart. She’s just in the top ten percent because she does her homework. My response was, " Wow, really??? So I guess hard work isn’t really supposed to pay off?" I was also irritated because this so called “dumb” girl is really very smart plus she is my friend. I hate when a certain few of the “smart” kids think they are better than others because they are smart! I also believe that working hard does pay off!

Our top 10 is a large group.

Sorry, marinus, about the spelling error.

Most of my classes are pointless- this is exactly what I’m saying. WE need to make classes harder at a younger age. MOst of the classes shouldn’t be pointless, they should be difficult. Maybe we should stop requiring that people read FRankenstein and have people read Paradise Lost-( I don’t really know. I’m just making suggestions here.)

I guess the basics would be algebra and so on , but also, grammar, and maybe studies relevant to the field one wants to go into.

Already answered in !. Easy classses require little work to pass. Most of the social studies and englishes are easy classes. Naturally, your easy vs. hard classes will partly depend on apitude but ou get my gist.

Learning how to work hard. Learning that all things don’t come on a platter of gold, that you can’t just breeze by and ace classes, pushing yourself to a pinnacle of achievement. However, I agree that if classes stay as easy as they do today, there will be no tangible benefit to working harder.

“Harder” is not the same as worthwhile. I didn’t consider Heart of Darkness an easy book to read. But I did consider reading it utterly pointless. So, I CliffNoted it and did other stuff instead. By your logic, this is bad. By mine, it is good. I strategically prioritized things that will actually improve my quality of life over mindless boredom.

Okay.

Let’s imagine a world in which my AP Lit class was harder to pass. I would probably have to spend more time reading Heart of Darkness. The curriculum would still be pointless for me, but now I would lose the opportunity to focus on other areas in class or in my spare time. How is this a good thing?

 1. What does stressing yourself out actually accomplish? Why should life be focused primarily on intense effort?

I would argue that you actually learn more about the realities of life from the “school of hard knocks” outside of the classroom. That’s where you can have experiences that actually guide how you want to use your time.

What skills are necessary to “work hard”? Like, how do you do that? What criteria must be met?

Our top ten is only 23

Well, Nil i agree with you but, as for all the arguments presented in favor of natural intelligence, i don’t give a ****. I can’t help that you have good genes, no need to lord it over people…

I’m totally digging all the idiots who don’t know what it means to work hard. Seriously you people need to go and F./uck a goat.
