Hi,
Recently moved to a state that is a year behind the state we came from schoolwise. We want to homeschool our daughters. Any recommendations of parents who homeschooled and their children went off to college? Looking for one with on line access . Thank you

What state are you in? Many states have virtual school programs and even if your state dooesn’t have one, you can pay to use one from another state. I now that is the case for Florida, flvs.net. My daughter was homeschooled from 2nd thru 8th grade. We used a variety of methods but my daughter’s least favorite were the online classes. She is a junior in high school now, still taking virtual school classes to so that she can take fine arts concentration at school and still dislikes them. Of course each child is different and virtual school is a whole lot easier on the parent.

As far as college preparation, many homeschoolers do go on to college. My daughter could have continued to homeschool and be very well prepared for college. She wanted to participate in varsity sports and felt she would be more comfortable being a part of the student body also.

Have you looked into private or religious schools? They usually aren’t “behind”.

I think it’s very hard to home school high school years.

^
Everyone will have their own experiences, of course, but I don’t think it has to be “very hard” to home school the high school years. There have been many very good acceptances this year for homeschoolers – encompassing all kinds of homeschooling approaches.

^^^I agree 100%! High school aged homeschoolers have many more opportunities than the average high schooler. They generally have more time to focus on their individual interests and tend to have a depth of knowledge far greater than the average student. Personally, I wish my daughter had continued to homeschool through high school, but she has had a great experience at her high school. And her friends that have been homeschooled through high school have had excellent acceptance results to top schools around the country.

You should try to PM some homeschooling parents on this forum.
Mini and Tolkenadult are the two I remember from the top of my head…

You might want to check out the homeschool thread in pre-college issues. As a homeschooling mom, I tend to agree with the online schools. My kids did some AP online classes that they did enjoy but most of their work has not been done online. If they had done all of their work online, I think they would have been frustrated and would have missed out on some of the perks of homeschooling. They have been able to pursue interests in a much greater depth than they would have been able to if they had gone to a traditional school. My daughter is finishing her junior year in college with very close to a full ride and has gotten all A’s except for two B’s. My son is a senior and although he did not get into any IVY league schools he has some good choices with good financial help. Like my daughter, I think he is very prepared for college. The homeschooling acceptance thread is amazing. Many homeschooled kids got accepted at many great schools, including the IVY’s.

There are SO MANY ways to homeschool! How old are your daughters? Are you set on having an all-in-one curriculum to provide everything or are you willing to pick and choose? Might they be interested in community college classes as dual enrollment? Do they have any strong interests (horses, ballet, botany, middle English literature) that they could really dive into with the extra time not spent in regular classes? Will they want to go to state universities, tech schools, LACs?

My perspective is for a highly gifted child who took community college classes about half-time, and used the other half to dive into interest areas (or be forced into well-roundedness by evil parents); and living in a homeschool-friendly state.

I would second the recommendation to check out the homeschooling forum.

Good luck!

Homeschooled my youngest 3-8th grades. Now she is in public h.s and she was very well prepared.

Colleges, including Ivies, accept homeschoolers all the time.

I used, for much of the time, Calvert’s program, with my own additions and some enrichment classes at a nearby church. She got her start in French & Latin at that place.

I ordered material from the Loyola press for English grammar & writing instruction. Exercises in English is very good, and also Voyages in Engl. This is grade school material.

Good luck!
