In Need of Fashion Help!

So I need some help matching my date! My date has a black dress with a "dark grey collar thingy". Not sure what she means about the collar part =/. The guys are just planning to wear slacks, shirt, and tie. What color combination of shirt/tie would work best with my date?

P.S. I'm planning to wear black slacks.

P.S.S. Any tips or ideas about the patterns for the shirt and tie would greatly be appreciated as well.

THANK YOU!

take your date with you. they're smart.

a grey shirt?

You can't go wrong with a white shirt. I really don't understand all this hype about matching. At my prom, the guys who looked best were wearing classic tuxes with white shirts. The ones who wore pink shirts with magenta ties to match their dates...let's just say they'll never show these pics to their kids in the future.

You could get a black shirt and a MATCHING dark grey tie. I've usually seen that with red or other brighter colors, but I assume it would still look good with grey. If the tie isn't a really close match, just pick another color from her dress (I guess it would be black unless she has some type of colored design on it).

I don't get what she means about the dress collar being grey...it just sounds weird for a dress to have one....

i was thinking about a black shirt, maybe gray striped? and then a solid gray tie to go with that.

^that could look nice depending on the stripe thickness and color. I'd aim for a pinstripe in the matching color.

sorry about this question, but i'm just horrible at fashion terms =/
what's the difference between a regular striped shirt and a pinstripe??
thank you so much for helping me with this!

you cant go wrong with going naked. theres is nothing sexier than going naked with a woody.

a pin stripe is a thinner stripe.

i would go with a black shirt(pinstripes always look good), and then match the tie to the "dark grey collar thing"

thanks for all the info!
so i found a black/gray pinstripe shirt, but the only gray tie they had had diagonally slanted black and silver lines, is that fine with the shirt?

It seems like it would be too much. Pick one stripe or the other. You could also go with a plain black tie.

mmkay. ill return this tie then =) and try to look for a non-striped black or gray tie. thank you very very much for helping =)
P.S. Does it matter if the tie black or gray?

If it's just a plain color, it could be either. I think that gray would look better as long as it really matches the dress and the pinstripes.

i'd prob say black shirt and a patterned tie in shades of gray...if you wear a solid colored gray tie and it doesn't match the shade of gray on the dress, depending on how much gray is on the dress it could look off. wearing some sort of patterened tie would prevent this.
or the black/gray pinstripe shirt with a black tie

black shirt. striped grey tie.
