In Preparation for your Pace Audition

My audition for Pace BFA acting is Saturday, Feb 26th. How does an audition for Pace go? What should I expect? I’m working on my monologues right now but I’m getting nervous.

Is there alot of kids that audition around 10 or is it split up throughout the day?

Also, is the acting audition really competitive and is it hard to get into?

Is there anything I should know beforehand that they don’t tell you?

It’s a very comfortable atmostphere at the Pace audtions. Our day was a joint MT and Acting audition day so there was a good number of teens waiting together with their families for their smaller groups to go audition in the various categories. Very much enjoyed chatting with the current students who dropped by to answer questions. After grilling the current students about the school, it was fun hearing about their own audition experiences and how they ended up where they did. Learned that Pace can be generous with merit scholarships.

Singers performed their songs on the main stage. The next few to sing waited in the wings. The dance call was 1.5 hours with ballet and jazz followed by 5 minutes of tap.

A few interesting tid bits from a parent’s perspective:
Pace is next door to City Hall, which is like being next door to the White House. The area around the school has a lot of security. One of the freshmen dorms is in the same building as classes, so students can find themselves not having to step outdoors on many days. They just go up and down the elevator all day long! :slight_smile: There’s a friendly 24 hour parking garage 1/2 block from the Performing Arts entrance. It was very easy driving into the financial district on a Sunday coming from our hotel by the Newark airport. 15-20 minutes from Newark through the Holland Tunnel and no traffic to speak of once in town. The financial district is quiet on weekends and the area by Pace has sort of a neighborhood feel; maybe it’s the cobblestone streets. Current students suggested eating at Harry’s down Gold Street which we did. Great pizza, great service and cozy atmosphere.

Just wanted to send a big “BREAK A LEG” to all the kids auditioning this weekend at Pace!!!

As classicalbk says, it really is a very interesting part of New York that is off the beaten “tourist” path, so worth it if you can spare a few minutes to walk around and see some of the Financial District sights. Within just a few minutes walk you can visit Wall Street, Southstreet Seaport (great Clam Chowder to be found here), the New York Stock Exchange building, Trinity Church (where the rescue workers were taken care of during 911 and George Washington attended services!), Century 21 for great bargain shopping, or take a FREE ride on the Staten Island Ferry right past the Statue of Liberty. Of course everyone is busy and has lots on their mind, but great to take a second and appreciate that you’re in one of the oldest and most historically significant areas of the United States, so enjoy!

The World Trade Center site is very close by too!

My D auditioned for the Acting Program at Pace this past weekend and received an email yesterday saying that she had advanced to the “telephone interview”, which she scheduled. There was never any mention of this step at the audition during the Q and A. Does anyone know any more about what it entails? She also auditioned for MT but hasn’t heard anything from the MT faculty. Do they also do a callback/telephone interview? Thanks!

Loved, loved, loved everything about the program when I visited: everyone was so positive and the whole creative vibe was brilliant. Afterwards, Pace was at the top of my list…until I did their Unified call back… It felt impersonal, and like a total cattle call. There was NO interview or any effort to get to know any auditioners personally. The dance call was ridiculous. It was impossible, and all of us agreed they were either assessing something else (like attitude or patience) or playing a cruel game of “Let’s see the monkeys dance."

@LIttleEdy- We had the opposite experience, but auditioned on campus. D Loved the audition for Pace-had a really wonderful time. Everyone agreed that Pace had one of the hardest dance calls- but we knew that going into it. Sorry you didn’t enjoy your audition experience!!

When/How does Pace notify with their decision?

@stagedoormama There was an interview if you auditioned on campus? I wish I had made that work. They weren’t doing auditions the week-end I was in New York, so did them in LA.

Our D auditioned on campus and there was no interview - just a question or two from the guy listening to monologues.

@LIttleEdy -Nope no interview for MT- though they chatted informally with my D. Someone else mentioned ^above about an telephone interview for an Acting major.

Hi all - Wayne here from the School of Performing Arts at Pace. I’m at ALL of the auditions (for all of the 8 majors) and so it’s insightful to pop in from time to time. Glad to hear that most are having a great time at our audition. I want to specifically address @LIttleEdy’s comment on the Unified audition. I’m not sure if this was Chicago or Los Angeles, but I want to remind everyone that at your callback audition, those in the room have also seen all of the Acceptd pre-screens (with songs, monologues, dance solos, wildcards, etc) and will often go back on the site before and after the audition to check in on folks. Please also keep in mind that we have four faculty members (dance, monologues, songs) that see all of these students and all committee them after each audition - even if we’re “on the road” at Unifieds with two faculty members. Each has their own audition style, having done this for many years at Pace and professionally for even longer. Every year I like to carefully remind those to not think too much about how much or little commenting, re-direction, or other that might occur in the audition. And, yes, our dance call is hard. But I also hope you were able to reach through the difficulty to find the joy. Peace to you all and have a wonderful audition season. As we always say: “Don’t forget that this is something that you LOVE to do!”

Hey Wayne! Love the comment “Reach through the difficulty to find the joy.” Lesson for most things in life! Hope you all at Pace had a great end to auditions. Regardless of the outcome, thanks again for a great experience with your school. :slight_smile:

Agreed @stagedoormama! Thanks @PacePerfArts! Any idea when/how kids will be notified? I’ve read that Amy called MT kids in the past but since she’s out on sabbatical was wondering if that will happen this year.

@PacePerfArts - there are rumors that MT acceptance calls started today - can you confirm? :slight_smile:

@jbrideau - my daughter got a call today.

My daughter’s audition was in NYC during Unifieds weekend. Overall, she really enjoyed everything about it. She had just come from Pearl Studios which was a mad house, lost her leotard and had to wear my cami (I literally gave her the shirt off my back!) to the dance call. Everyone was so nice and understanding, people were trying to help her. Such a difference after being at the other audition that day! The dance call was hard, but fun and most importantly - positive.

Congrats @stmama!

@stmama -Congrats!!!

@jbrideau @stagedoormama - Thank you!
