In School Suspension

So a friend of mine got ISS for not attending chapel (our school is religious).

Will this go on her permanent record?
In my opinion this is ridiculous and she is planning on petitioning if if does.

Thanks!

It will depend on the school. Different schools keep track of different information.

I don't think any college in the country will keep your friend out because of a one-time ISS for missing chapel, if that's the concern. Applications will require a brief explanation of any suspensions, which I assume will include any served in-school. That's only a guess, but if it's true, then whether or not the suspension goes on your friend's record may not mean much.

A school guidance counselor should be able to let your friend know whether colleges will see her suspension + whether it's something that she'll need to disclose. I'm just assuming that college admissions are the issue here, but the guidance counselor or Dean of Students should be able to answer your record question, regardless.

I contacted the counselor to talk about my friend's issue because a lot of us peers disagreed with it. We found it ridiculous because a lot of people skip chapel yet nothing happens to them. It was a one time event and my friend was accepted into a very prestigious school recently (cornell). She is very worried.

However, the counselor said that she "didn't know" if it would be on the permanent record. Should my friend contact Cornell right now? Or should she ask her parents to talk with the dean about the ISS having impact at all on her?

If your friend has already been accepted to Cornell, I imagine that she'll be just fine. This is only an educated prediction, but I can't imagine that her acceptance is possibly at stake because of something so minor.

Your friend should talk to the GC about whether or not she needs to contact Cornell about the suspension. She could also place an anonymous call to Cornell's admissions office and ask them if it needs to be reported. If necessary, CC parents might be helpful with this, as some of them may have gone through it with their own kids or their kids' friends. I'm not sure what the proper protocol is, but I don't think your friend should spend too much time worrying. Just tell her to keep gettin' herself to chapel :)

Missing a chapel service seems considerably minor when taking into account that ivies usually only revoke students who are suspended because of completely stupid offenses (ie: drinking, street racing, etc)

Thanks very much. I appreciate all of your input.
I thought it was ridiculous that they gave her ISS for something so small.
At my school, people who are caught with drugs or test positive for drugs also get ISS. It's strange how someone who skips chapel (minor offense) gets the same punishment as someone who is committing a felony (or misdemeanor...i don't know).

Private school, private rules.

I know this is very serious to your friend, but I have visions of the folks at the Cornell admissions office having a ROFL experience when they receive your friends explanatory note. After they stop giggling uncontrollably, I would expect them to have a conversation on the order of: She got suspended for what? Hey Bill, look at this, that kid you wanted is a juvenile delinquent! Oh yeah, skipped chapel. She did what? Whoa, now there's a life of crime! (Followed by more giggling.)

I am not trying to make light of your friend's concerns, which I certainly understand, but the general idea here is that unless she was pining to attend a college that has mandatory chapel and no sense of proportion whatsoever, it seems incredibly unlikely that there will be any bad consequences, even if her skipping chapel ISS appears on her transcript in big red letters (which would, to my mind, be cause for further mirth over at the Cornell admissions office.)

Please tell her not to worry.

Thanks everyone! My friend got into Cornell today! But she still wants to know if she needs to report it as a suspension because she didn't get outright suspended, just ISS-sent to clean the chapel for a day. And I believe the ISS will not be reported on her file.

no-tell her to celebrate and be happy

she is going to get rescinded. My friend got rescinded from Swarthmore when he received a saturday detention and slept through class.

^Nice try.

You don’t get rescinded for Saturday Detention. Ever.
