In-state Chance!

Hello! UNC is my first choice even though I know it is an extremely high reach based on my scores. I hope though that UNC stands by their "we don't just look at numbers" claim.

SAT Scores:

1st time: 1510 [CR:620, M:440, W:450, E:6]

2nd time: 1780 [CR:690, M:520, W:590, E:8]

3rd time: 1760 [CR:700, Math:500, W:560, E: 8]

Super Scored: 1810

I know my scores are VERY low but I will be taking one last time in Oct. and I've been studing and hopefully bring the math up to 600 and the writing up to 650, if I can I'd like to bring the CR up to 750.

SAT II: Literature 650

ACT: 26 [E 26, M 24, R 31, S 23] Should I even send this?

ECs:

I have a working student under the UNC-Chapel Hill Equestrian team coach/PE Teacher for the past 5 years (25 h/w).

I worked as a waitress for 8 months (20 h/w), as a groom for 6 (15 h/w), and I have been a weekend barn manager for the past 1 1/2 years (appx. 20 h/w).

I was on my Church's youth Council for 4 years, VP for 1 year.

I've been teaching beginner riding at a summer camp for the past 3 years.

I've bought, cared for and trained my horse (ex-racehorse) from the ground up with no financial help from my parents. I am very committed to her and that is where the majority of my time is spent out side of school when I'm not working.

Recommendation letters will be from my Trainer (UNC PE teacher/coach), my Sociology teacher (from the CC), combined letter from the UNC Equestrian Team Co-Captains (for UNC app only), all I expect to be excellent.

I will not need financial aid. Third generation legacy.

Does this quote below suggest a higher chance of homeschoolers getting in comapared to regular students or am I just reading to much into it....

"In 2008, 87 home-school students applied for first-year admission; 41 were admitted and 15 enrolled."

So What do you think? Do I have any chance at all?

bump, anyone?

The fact that you are “legacy” means nothing for in-state. Chapel Hill is a reach for you due to your low scores and GPA.

Carolina is need blind so the fact that you can pay for it doesn’t mean anything, and legacy only matter as a tie for NC residents. Also I am assuming that your GPA is unweighted, in which case t is good, but your test scores are mediocre, so I would work on raising them. D you happen to know your weighted GPA using the NC standard weighting system (with a 96 being 4.0 in a regular class 5.0 in honors and 6.0 in AP, and anything bellow 96 being less than 4.0)?

Oh and also, I do believe you are only allowed 1 letter of recommendation and it has to be from a teacher. Your guidance counselor may attach a letter to the counselor statement explaining any “life circumstances” if he so desires, but I am not sure how this would work for a home school student.

Using that scale my weighted gpa is appx 4.4 though I don’t have my exact grades infront of me. I counted the CC classes as AP classes but they only have letter grades.

I am so frustrated with my SAT score because it is the biggest drawback. According the CB my CR score is above the 50%, my writing and ACT scores barely make it and my math is in the bottom 16%.

So is that 16% taken up by atheletes or are there other people with just as abismal scores as me getting in?

How much do you think a letter of recomendation from a UNC teacher (even if it is PE) and current students will help?

I asked when I went for a visit, there is no limit to recomendation letters.

What they said about recs is interesting as the application only has room for 1 email address, and it specifies a teacher (I’m not saying your wrong I jut find it interesting.) Also Community College classes only count as honors not AP (I know this sounds idiotic but the people at the Department of Public instruction will tell you that they believe AP courses to be harder than CC courses.)
I’m assuming your weighted GPA is still fairly high so that will count for something, but I would still raise your math score if I were you. If you coul do that and get good recs and good essays I would say you have a fairly good shot
