High School Junior here looking forward to getting outta High School! Wooo!
I've been wanting to apply to Duke (yeah.. I know..), Vandy, Emory, UVA, Hopkins, but I've pretty much decided to just settle and go for Early Action/Decision to UNC to get the application process over with so i can enjoy my Senior Season. Unlike most, I'll probably write my essays over the summer and note my teacher(s) about recommendations before summer.

GPA Unweighted: 3.2 - 3.7 (3.2 if I get all Cs and Bs this year.. Currently it is 3.6)

GPA weighted: 4.3 - 4.7 (4.4 if I get all Cs and Bs this year.. Currently it is 4.5)

SAT: 2150, will probably take it one more time.. So probably 2200+

Top 10% of Class AT LEAST.. I go to a very competitive and perfectionist school

6 APs so far, will take 5-6 next year to make 12.

Founded 2 Clubs, Co-President in both

NHS

Baseball 3 years so far

2 Year JV track, 1 Year Varsity track (Will be 2 next year)

All-State Violin, 2nd Chair

1st Place in Peabody Violin Competition

Lots of community stuff (Key Club, Enviro Club, etc)

Science Olympiad

It's Academic

Blah BLah Blah..

Thanks! And if you may, please consider the worst case senarios :P

The only thing I'm worried about is my Unweighted GPA... I kinda slacked off during first semester that will result in 2 Bs, 1 C, and 3 As (As are 2 AP and 1 Honors). We have 4 quarters in my school, so I'll have time to bring up the C in Biology and the B's in the 2 AP classes.

Do colleges look at semester/quarter grades or only final grades? And do they look at cumulative GPAs or the GPA from final grades?

That 2150 SAT is very solid for an instate student for UNC. You don't have anything to worry about. Just be sure to stay in the top 10%. That's the main thing to focus on. And they will overlook a few blemishes on your GPA if you are taking alot of AP's. I had a 31 ACT, and 4 C's in AP Courses and was admitted Early Action to Notre Dame.

There are a lot of competitive public high schools in north carolina where unc doesn't really worry about the top 10 percent. I was in the top 20-25% and I was still admitted EA.

Btw, I've got some questions..
1. Do you think I should apply to any of the colleges I listed? Vandy, UVA, Hopkins, Duke, Emory, etc? I'd like to save some money for my parents by just settling for UNC
2. What are my chances at some scholarships?
3. Should I go Early Action or Binding - Given that I am just "settling" for UNC?
4. ACTs? SAT IIs? SATs again? To take.. or Not to take..?

I'm not exactly an expert on this stuff but if you have any interest in those colleges then you should apply for sure. It would probably be wise to apply to a few others even if UNC is your top choice, just in case. UNC doesn't have a binding, just early admission and regular. A 2150 is very good, if you are satisfied with that then you don't have any worries not retaking the SAT.

apply to the schools where you will be the happiest. All these schools have different pros/cons. Yet, UVA and UNC are so similar. I'd be hard pressed to justifyOOS expense versus UNC In-state.
