In state or out of state?

My Dad recently moved to Houston, Texas for his job. His employer allowed his family to stayan additional year to let me finish up my senior year of high school. I currently live in northern Virginia with my Mom while my Dad comes and visits us every two weeks. He has offered to pay for college for me as long as I got to a college in Texas because he can’t afford out of state tuition. The school I want to go to is James Madison. I thought we’d be able to get instate tuition for both states but he claims only Texas. I’ve lived in Virginia my whole life and won’t move to Houston until this summer. Am I going to be able to pay in state tuition to Virginia schools?

Not paying VA taxes may make it a real issue. http://www.schev.edu/Students/VAdomicileguidelines.asp?from=students You can call JMU. The admissions personnel should be able to talk through it with you.

If you’re a resident of Virginia and are graduating from a Virginia high school, you may be able to make the case that you qualify for in-state tuition. Worse comes to worse, UT and Texas A&M are both really good schools.

I would definitely apply to the Texas state schools you’re most interested in just in case. I’d do it quickly as well. UT is a lot more selective than people give them credit for, especially with OOS applicants.

UT Austin is very competitive for oos students as most of the seats are taken by in state students through automatic admission. For in state tuition policy, you do need to check for each school. It can vary from school to school even within the same state.
