In state transfer with out of state AA?

I've been searching the forum regarding transferring into the UC system but I'm still a bit confused on some things because of my situation so I thought I'd ask for some help.

I got my AA at a CC in another state and then moved to LA where I've been working for a several years. I'm now 25 and would like to finish my bachelor's at a UC (possibly UCLA, but I'm open to others, and can move if need be). I'll probably major in Computer Science.

The problem is I keep reading that transfer students have a **very **low chance of getting in to a UC if they didn't go to a CCC. I looked at ASSIST.org but that only seems to cover CCC's so I have no way of really knowing what credits will transfer anyway.

I guess I'm just really stumped on what my next step should be. Would the smart thing be to try taking a few classes at a local CCC before trying to get into any schools in the UC system? I read about making sure I have all the prerequisites down for my major over at the UC Transfer page. So one thing I was thinking I could do was to take some of those at a CCC. However, will the credits from my out of state AA transfer to a CCC? Or am I supposed to transfer my out of state AA credits directly over to a UC and then transfer my CCC credits over separately? Would I be considered a CCC transfer student if I just took a few classes at a CCC before transferring to a UC? I'm just not sure how this all works.

Any help is appreciated!

Not quite the same situation, I did a year at an out of state CC, a year at a CCC, and then transferred to Cal.

Depending on your major, you can pretty much guess which classes from OoS will articulate at your CC. If you have credits that look like they’ll match pre-reqs on assist.org, retaking them would be silly. For anything that doesn’t sound familiar, yeah, you should probably take those. But the assist articulations are still a good indication of what transfers are expected to have completed.

Credits will transfer separately… CCC credits are much easier to transfer in, since they’re already pretty well defined. For OoS stuff, you’ll have to submit syllabuses for all the classes you took (at least for CoE at Berkeley), and then they’ll evaluate the coursework. Typically you can’t get courses to transfer until after you’ve been accepted and are enrolled at a school, which kinda sucks. Turns it into a bit of a guessing game. I didn’t know exactly what I had credit for until the end of Fall semester, but it was pretty easy to guess what would be cleared. Of course, CS has some weird policies, and depending on your school some pre-reqs simply cannot be transferred in (ie, for CS at Berkeley you’ll have to retake discrete math and most CS classes).

If you get your CCC to evaluate your OoS classes, it won’t have any effect on how the UC treats your old coursework… they’ll do their own evaluation. So, don’t bother the CCC with paperwork unless you’re filling IGETC requirements or need a pre-req cleared or something.

Also, I think if you’re enrolled at a CCC at the time you apply, you’ll get priority in admissions. At least in my case, I know I was treated as a CCC student despite only being there for a year. You could also apply regularly and see, just because chances are lower for non-CCC students doesn’t mean you don’t have a shot.
