In-state tuition at Pitt?

Hey! So this question isn’t about me, but rather about my friend. She was accepted to Pitt and it is her first choice school, but she is an out-of-state student. She has a lot of family that lives in Pittsburgh, and was wondering that if after her first year she lived with her Pittsburgh family during the summer and the rest of the year and registered to vote, etc in-state would she then qualify for in-state tuition at Pitt the following years?

Thanks!

These are the guidelines for changing your domicile with Pitt: http://www.payments.pitt.edu/tuitionguide.html

I believe your parent has to have lived in PA for a certain amount of time.

@hailtopitt1787 Thank you for the link! At the bottom of that page there’s a form to petition to receive in-state tuition (http://www.payments.pitt.edu/documents/petition_form.pdf), so could she (hypothetically) apply with that form after a semester/year at Pitt?

@extrapeppermint, if she is already attending Pitt, wouldn’t she have a problem with this part of the form?

It says at the bottom of form:

Also as long as she is a dependent student then the residency of her parents will matter.

Are your friend’s GPA and test scores high? Could she take the SAT or ACT again before HS graduation and take a gap year and reapply next year and maybe have a chance at merit scholarship?

Aren’t there any comparable schools in her state?

Also she could have her family move to PA and establish domicile for the required time before she applies to Pitt.

But if she is instate that would only save limited amount of money over being out-of-state.
