I just started my junior year at a high school in the Houston area. I moved here a couple months ago from Bellevue, WA (which is 10 mins away from Seattle). I've lived there October, 2000 to February, 2009. I recently read somewhere that I can qualify for in state tuition if I had lived at least one year in WA in the past 5 consecutive years. I'd really like to go back to WA and go to UW. It's not just the school that I like, it's the whole area/people/culture. My dad still lives there and my mom is paying taxes on her house. Would they consider me as a resident of Washington or Texas? Will I have to live in WA for one year before I qualify for in state tuition? Thank you.

Here’s the primary source for WA residency, I don’t see anything about the 1 out of 5 yr stipulation:

[UW Residency - Understanding Washington State Residency](<a href=“Residency for Tuition Purposes - Office of the University Registrar”>Residency for Tuition Purposes - Office of the University Registrar)

Here it talks about being out of the state, but only for the military or college:

[UW Residency - Washington Residents Absent From State](<a href=“Washington Residents Absent from State - Office of the University Registrar”>Washington Residents Absent from State - Office of the University Registrar)

By the time you apply for college, you’ll have been out of WA a year and a half and you will be submitting transcripts, etc. from an OOS HS. So, unless there’s a technicality due to your mom or dad’s residence (I assume you are a dependent of your mom who now lives in TX??), I’m not seeing anything that would permit you to be instate. This is what you have to do to establish residency in WA, pretty tough, particularly the first and last parts:

[UW Residency - Establishing A Bona Fide Domicile](<a href=“Residency Requirements (Non-affidavit) - Office of the University Registrar”>Residency Requirements (Non-affidavit) - Office of the University Registrar)

“Students must prove conclusively that they have not come to Washington State primarily for educational purposes.”

“Be financially independent for the current and prior calendar years.”

Thank you. I’ll try to find the page that I got my info from. I think you may be right, unfortunately. :(
