Hi,
i will be going to my instate college(virginia)
my parents just moved to NY. i asked the school if i will get to pay instate tuition next following years.
they said i will have to pay out of state next year since it will depend on my parent's residency.
but unless they ask me, and feel out the fafsa, i will be able to keep my instate tuition.

i know have to be 24 to be indepdent....but im only 19 right now..
but if my parents will not help me with the tuition. is it any possible to become independent? like get a job or something? i already have a job actually.

or, if i dont fill out the fafsa, can i still take out loans? cuz it will be still cheap....
i really dont know what to do and feel like im just stuck...
pls help!!

You can’t become independent, and you can’t take out federal loans without the FAFSA. A job will help you pay bills but it won’t make you independent; the only way you can become independent is to graduate from college, become a veteran, get married and/or have a child that you provide more than half of her support, enroll in a post-grad or doctoral program, get emancipated by a qualified magistrate, or get declared a ward or an orphan.

I’m not sure what you can do if your parents move to New York. You’re not supposed to lie on the FAFSA or to the college about your eligibility for in-state tuition, so if the college’s office tells you that you can no longer claim in-state tuition then you can’t claim in-state tuition. If you don’t fill out the FAFSA, you forfeit federal aid and you might not be able to pay the cost of attendance solely through your income from your job. How much help can your parents give you? If you can’t make it up, you might end up having to transfer to a cheaper college or seek departmental scholarships to meet your burden.

This would be dicey for the parents to claim to continue instate residency if in fact they are NOT residing in VA. THAT IS DISHONEST too. The parents’ employers will be issuing w-2 forms to them. Their income will have been earned in NY state. There will be NY state taxes taken out. They will have a residence in NY state (or are you suggesting they lie and say they are still residing in VA?).

If you are fully self-supporting, and you study part-time, you may be able to be considered an in-state resident for tuition and fees. In Maryland, this would be relatively easy to arrange at a community college (in-state after 3 months working and living here), so it may be worth discussing with the administration at your university. It is almost impossible for a student who is in a given state primarily for the purposes of his/her education who is studying full-time to gain in-state residence on his/her own unless they qualify for independent status under the FAFSA guidelines.

my parents are willing to help, but i ddint want to burden them.
i’m not sure if choosing my instate school(william and mary) is a right choice.
if i have to pay out of state, i could just go to the other school(purdue) that i was gonna go at pretty much the same price…
