In-State URM, readying for the ACT, chances

Hi, I'm a junior in HS in NC and this is my first post, though I've been a loyal follower of CC for some time now. I've searched for URM action at UNC-CH and have come up with just a little bit of info, so I want to throw this question out about the URM question at UNC, particularly from an in-state point of view. I'm getting ready to take the mandatory ACT this spring, and just wondering about my chances.

My profile:

100% Latino, born in Central America, but lived most of my life in NC
W GPA 3.91, UW 3.22
Rank: just made the top 25%
JV and V sports
Clubs
Volunteer work

I'm being a little vague on purpose, but any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Relleno

What’s the question?

Wether or not you’ll get in based on URM? It’ll help you, but it’s not a golden ticket.

No, I’m not looking for a “golden ticket”. I know that my GPA and rank are not typical of UNC acceptances, and my question is do I even have a prayer? I know I’m not in that top 10% rank ballpark :frowning:
But I do have value, and one part of that is my diversity. I’d be the first person in my Latino family to attend college in the US. I like to consider myself a role model for younger folks in my Latino community who are trying to find their way in life. I’m a good student, not great. English was not my first language, but I stand proud of where I am at my place in life.
My question, as you have asked, with my current stats and my background, do I have a viable prayer of acceptance to UNC?

I typed this beautiful reply and then it logged me out and deleted it.

I don’t feel like rewriting it, so:

 • Work on proving more leadership/better ECs
 • Have perfect essays
 • Study your butt off for the ACT

Killer essay/excellent ACT combo worked for my good friend who didn’t have a prayer. He was/is a white guy from Mecklenburg with average GPA and average rank at a good private school with only OK ECs. Worked his butt off for a 35 on the ACT and compelling essays and got in.

Thanks Artemis, great advice and I appreciate it.
