In-Suite Bathrooms

A number of the freshman dorms have suites with their own bathrooms. How do these bathrooms get cleaned? Do the Harvard cleaning/maintenance services take care of this or do the students that share the bathroom clean it?

Dorm crew cleans the bathrooms.

…once every 2 weeks

I believe that people with suites with their own bathrooms have to clean the bathrooms themselves.

If you have an in-suite bathroom, dorm crew or FMO (Facilities Maintenance Operations) will be around roughly once every two weeks to clean. If the bathroom is communal, FMO will clean it daily.

Thats what I did today: clean bathrooms :)

Smoda, Bathrooms in a common suite are cleaned by the FMO during term time
and the dorm crew after the end of session typically. Since you have a D(?), girls
suite bathrooms are generally a lot cleaner than boys; I guess the girls do a lot of
cleaning between the 2 week visit by the FMO ;)

(The FMO comes in every two weeks to clean the bathroom)

A medical-type trash can (one you can flip open with your foot) may
be useful for the bathroom alongside the shower curtain you will need.
Supplies for cleaning are usually stocked in the basement of your
entryway.

Thanks so much for the new advice. D will be living in Holworthy so the bathroom is in-suite but there are 8 girls sharing the bathroom. I have seen a variety of pictures from the suites and I thought that I saw shower curtains there, I do not remember a trash can. Does knowing the dorm change your advice? Also, it’s good to know that cleaning supplies are available to the students.

Also, you mentioned that the bathrooms would be cleaned every two weeks. What happens if a suite mate gets ill in the bathroom? Do the students clean it themselves or can FMO be called on a case by case basis?

I thought the Holworthy bathrooms were in the hall between the two suites. It has two stalls, two showers and two sinks, so I wonder if that type is cleaned daily. Some buildings have the bathroom in the suite itself. And then some have traditional group bathrooms for the hall. Holworthy is kind of a hybrid.

MY s will be in Strauss with three roommates and a common bathroom. Do we need to purchase a shower curtain and/or a trash can for the bathroom?

I believe Holworthy bathrooms are cleaned daily, but I’m not sure. Despite the cleaning, they can still get gross with 8 people leaving their shower stuff all over the place.

For the in-suite bathroom in Strauss, you (or one of the suitemates) should buy a trash can. A shower curtain, however, is provided.

^ so no need to purchase a trash can for Holworthy?

So I thought that since I have completed D’s move in to Holworthy, I would give this thread an update. Therefore those that do searches in the furture might benefit.

. The thrash can was a great suggestion actually. Since I had already purchased it before I was told that we may not need it, we brought it anyhow. It was a definitely good idea. I would also add pump hand soaps, maybe paper towels, etc. Shower curtains were in the showers, so that was not an issue. Proctor said that the bathrooms would be cleaned every 2 weeks.

Yikes. Every two weeks! With 8 kids. Yuck.

I assume those eight kids are totally unable to clean after themselves?

^ Yes, especially in the circumstances they are given. Have you seen those bathrooms? They look in all respects like a hall bathroom on a traditional dorm floor, except for the fact they have only 2 stalls, 2 showers and 2 sinks. They are not in-suite bathrooms. It would take a kid quite a while with janitorial equipment to clean it. And I think it would be fair to expect that they be cleaned by staff on a much more regular basis than every 2 weeks.

^The only difference between Dorm Crew and the occupants of a suite is that Dorm Crew has equipment. Except since everyone can go to the Dorm Crew office to get said equipment, there really is no difference. They are all students.

^ There is a real difference – Dorm Crew is paid to clean the bathrooms. Starting at $12/hour. And they clean the private in-suite bathrooms. So students on the Dorm Crew clean other students bathrooms for wages and have their own bathrooms cleaned by the Dorm Crew.

I love that someone asked if someone gets ill in the bathroom will anyone come and clear it up. I’m sure the kids are capable enough of cleaning the bathroom themselves. If there’s 8 in a suite they could easily make a rota, one can clean the bathroom every 2-3 days, it’d hardly take any time and each kid will only have to do it once every 3 weeks or so.

^ Yes, I did ask that question. I know that I have heard of it at other schools that you call maintenance for that type of clean up. I think this could be due to concern with flu transmission and such.
