In term of prestige.. where does CMU stand?

there are 6 million people in hong kong, but becoz of the former british rule, people tend to go to the UK for college(or they call it uni) there rather than the states. So most employers prefer UK grads than US grads when it comes to hiring, as they are more familiar with UK schools, other than the big names or the ones with huge alumni base.

I believe people from HK go to CMU for the Ugrad experience, which I would believe to be better than a huge research university like Cal or Mich, that's actually what i wanted but i guess i changed my mind.. But people in hong kong are definitely more familiar and prestige whorish towards the ivies, Cal, Mich, stanford, and actually the UCs and those schools in the west coast for that matter where there are a huge asian population.

I chose ross coz i want a top B-school education while having an exciting college life. Ann arbor's constantly rated as one of the most exciting and vibrant college towns, I felt at home when i visited there. That's why i picked it over wharton

Thanks for the explanation!

2331clk, it is indeed true. The ones that are well known are the Ivy league colleges and large research universities like Berkeley and Michigan. The reputation of the grad.school plays a very major role. Also, the fact that Berkeley and Michigan are strong in almost every professional courses. Yes, USNews is available, and most find that in Engineering, Business, Law, Medicine, theses two universities are well ranked.

Wait, so since econ is a joint program, do I need to be accepted by BOTH Tepper and H&SS to get into econ?

nope, just HSS

Oh, that's even better. H&SS is easier to get into than Tepper. Yay.

apparently they accepted me for Tepper, SCS , even gave me half tuition scholarship, and waitlisted me for H&SS..like what the hell.. haha but who cares

bearcats, you are flat-out wrong. CMU has one of the highet percentages of international students of any school in the country. It is widely respected around the world. Google set up its Pittsburgh office within the school. What you are saying is a downright lie.

HAhaha. Bearcats, that's pretty interesting. Maybe it's because you ranked them third or something?

So how does CMU look to employers on wall street?

All I have to say is I did a comparison of the two schools (Tepper/Ross) using their latest postgrad employment surveys in another thread. You can't just take one example and use it as your overall analysis. For example, omg CMU was rated #1 for jobs and Umich wasn't even mentioned!1!11!oneoneone.

Excerpt from previous post:

"Let's take Ross's postgrad Ugrad Busiuness top hiring companies.
They are:

Credit Suisse Group (14)

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (12)

UBS AG (10)

compared to Tepper's

Deloitte Consulting (4)

Deutsche Bank (4)

Goldman Sachs (3) IBM Consulting (3) JPMorgan Chase (3)

Ross Total Students: 348
Tepper's survey: Didn't count but around 60
Both had medians of 55,000
"

The earlier comment about how CMU was not as recognized internationally... I have to reply to that.

I went to Shanghai for a SAT prep course in CHINESE. Over 900 students for ONE tuition centre divided into 3 huge lecture halls. The teacher who taught essay-writing was talking about the colleges he applied/got accepted to and CMU was one of them...

A HUGEEEEEE HUSH fell over the room and everyone was like: "WOW."

CMU is definitely 'rising'; people aren't going to just focus on Ivies now. :)

Carnegie Mellon has a good computer science program? I've just started researching colleges and came across CMU, and I someone said they thought it was a really artsy school like Juliard (except much easier to get in, of course). So... can you confirm all this for me?

Yes, CMU's computer science program is in the top 5 of the country, and computer science grads typically all have jobs or go to grad school after graduation. Google and Microsoft together hired almost 1/3 of the graduation class last year. CMU also has a strong business school and fine arts school, perhaps most notably musical theater.

Ooh, wow. Do you know if there's a website that says what the "top 5 in the country" are? I heard that the people who created Google and Yahoo both went to Stanford too... yeah =)

questionsyay, CMU is one of the top schools in the country for engineering, business, and computer science (and just about anything else related to technology.) It has very strong theater arts and music programs, but it is in no way like Juliard.

If you have a membership to the newsweek website, you should be able to find the rankings there (Computer Scince Doctoral Program or somesuch). Also, you might want to try looking around CMU's SCS website, but they don't tend to mention their ranking as much as ECE/engineering do, for whatever reason.

Also, several years ago Slashdot put up a poll "Which is the best school in the country for computer science?" and listed CMU, MIT, Berkley, Stanford, and some other schools. CMU students wrote a bot to vote for CMU, and the next day MIT students did the same. When the poll closed, CMU and MIT had over 20,000 votes apiece (MIT about 100 more than CMU, I think), and every other school had under 1,000. :)

Okay thank you =)

CMU's prestige is definitely rising. But who cares? It's a great school. CMU grads get top jobs and go to good grad schools. You get a great education. So what if the average layman doesn't know about it.

I am split between U. Mich and CMU. I got into the IS program and plan to go into business. At Mich, I'm currently, undeclared.

I know that the IS program at CMU is prestigious, but on a whole which would you choose?

isnt it past May1st deadline already?

anyway...since u went undeclared for Umich, i have a feelling that you dont know what you want to do for sure. In that case, I would choose U Mich if i were u. U mich is more all-rounded, has more programs offered and all programs and department are ranked within top 15 in the nation with the exception of chemistry(which is tied with princeton at 16). If it were simply business, technology or engineering, you cant go wrong with CMU or Umich, but if you arent sure, U Mich is a safer bet.
