U of Michigan vs. CMU con & pro

I'd like to have your ideas since it's a UM tread- I am an international student and have to pay almost same tuition for both school, (over $40,000-) and I am interesting in engineering. Your opinions PLEASE!! (sorry it's a same posting at college admission)

My friends at Carnegie Mellon don't really enjoy the atmosphere there. I personally love ann arbor

Academically, they are equal (in Engineering), but CMU has slightly more personalized Freshman and Sophomore classes whereas the University of Michigan/Ann Arbor are more pleasant and more fun than CMU/Pittsburgh. I would chose Michigan over CMU, but it really depends on the individual. I agree with Matt. I have known several CMU students and they never really seemed to enjoy their experience.

Thanks for the responses. Can anyone tell me which one is a more respected school? In terms of prestige, education, job placement, campus life, and reputation, which one is the best overall? Which one would you go to? I'm really at a loss as to which one I want to go to.

Michigan's reputation is more wide-ranging. Outside of the Engineering/Computer Science world, CMU's reputation is very limited. Michigan has a reputation accross all disciplines.

But since you are interested in Engineering, I'd say the two universities are equal in terms of reputation, job placement and education.

However, as I mentioned above, in some ways, such as personalized attention for Freshmen and Sophomores, CMU does have an edge over Michigan.

In terms of campus life, Michigan is, in most ways, superior to CMU.

and business -_- tepper is on par with ross, and in some cases, such as computational finance, ahead of ross

That's right bearcats. Tepper is excellent. I don't think it is quite as good as Ross though. When it comes to Finance, Accounting, Marketing or Management, Ross is considered a notch above.

that's right alexandre. but i think the focus is different for ross and tepper. Tepper is more quantitative based. Their strength lies in operations, computational finance, business modelling and management information systems...while ross i think is more on soft skills and theories, and obviously, better at finance, marketing and accounting.

^ Exactly .
