In what ways should people be equal?

I’m not opposed to equal governmental funding for schools. But I don’t like the way “equality” is being defined in this thread because I feel that it misrepresents a really important ideal. The idea that all persons deserve exactly the same human rights no matter what is, IMO, a truly great concept that should not be muddied by placing something like education on the same standard of equality.

By the way, the above is just my opinion. If you read the link I offered in post #74, you’ll see that there are many different philosophical views of “equality”. If you want to present your own that differs from mine, feel free to do so. I’d be happy to debate it.

^Hm…well, like I said, if equality for you means the same exact education for everyone, then yeah, I don’t agree with that.

But to be honest, I don’t really know a better word to use…

So perhaps I have been getting irrationally angry at your use of “unequal.” Semantics.

Wow, I missed this…condescending much? Honestly.

I can see how I maybe come across as naive, but whatever.

I don’t think it is just semantics. Some things need to be put on a different sort of pedestal because they need to be viewed in a different way.

I think you could make a strong argument from the perspective of meritocratic equality - in other words, that all students should be tracked into programs that are designed to fit them.

^Yeah, although there are issues with tracking, I am ultimately for it. There are certainly different ways to go about it.

Well, maybe it’s not just semantic, but I have focused in on that word to take it that you meant that only certain people deserve a higher education…which maybe you do believe? IDK.

This might end up sounding naive, but what if everyone was rich. I mean, no one would have to compete for more money. We are all just satisfied that everyone is a billionaire.

^Think on that for a second…I think you will see how it’s impossible…

^^ Prices by default would adjust accordingly and no one would be wealthy. Then the intrinsic greed of human beings would just cause disparities in wealth to grow again.

^^ I know its impossible, but it would be really nice though. Although the chances of everyone being satisfied is next to zero. Like what Jersey said, the nature of human greed would only cause disparities in wealth to grow again.

A sufficient high school standard is enough to advance to higher education if the student excels.
