A: too optimistic
B: too pessimistic
C: relatively accurate

With my own "Chances" thread, at least, I felt that most people were being far too cheery about my chances.

definitely A; they dont realize how tough it is to get into some of these places these days

A 10 charaaaaa

Choice D--up too late at night on rating board sites.

Seriously, I think whether you get a person who is an A or a B or a C is entirely a random chance depending upon who is on the website at the time you are posting your inquiry.

I think if you converted the language used into %, or if the poster gives %, just halve that %, you'd be in the ballpark.

Most chances posters have not been through the experience and don't have much basis other than published "admitted student profiles" for their predictions.

For example, most chances posters aren't aware that with Top 25 schools, being in the 75th % of applicants (SAT, GPA) still gives a random applicant less than 50% chance of admission. You've got to account for legacies, recruited athletes (scholarship or not), URM (race), URM (socioeconomic challenges) and geographic diversity.

A) I think most people are optimistic.

D) Clueless

A&B&E-All over the place
E.Biased

A bunch of people don't get into where they want to go to which happens to be where you are applying. They make themselves feel better to say that its impossible to get into (since they didn't get admitted huh?)

I admit that I've told a few white lies myself when posting. There have been times when I've responded with a "you definitely have a shot" when my mind was thinking "he/she doesn't have a very good chance."

(I don't direct this to anyone in particular, so don't worry if I responded that way on your chance thread. :-) )

I495 - If your username means Interstate 495, I know where that is! If it doesn't and you have no idea what I'm talking about, please disregard what I just said :)

I think A or C. I've seen people honestly telling someone who wasn't really qualified that they didn't think he/she had a good shot (in a nice way of course). Otherwise people will be a little more optimistic than necessary. Of course, I guess we never reeeallly know who has a shot and who doesn't. Only the AOs do.

clueless and they just want people to make them feel better about their own situation so you get into this dumb game of "ill chance you if you chance me"
and then people are chancing each other even if they have no idea about schools

chancing is pretty dumb.....none of us are admissions officers

CC offers a pretty skewed view of college admissions. pretty much only the very best, crazy competetive studens go on, so all you see are the 2200+ 3.9+ GPAs. you never really see the 2100s, 3.6 GPAs post very often.

ex. kid at my school went to Yale, 29 ACT, white, 3.5 GPA, football, but not recruited, benchwarmer first year

kid at my school, 27 ACT, 3.7 GPA, columbia, state debate chamion and nothing else.

A

especially hate it when they just post a quick response and tell the person to chance them back. They're honestly just trying to make good comments to get chanced back with good comments to feel better about themselves...

To all of you who said that kids are overly optimistic (and I know I have been from time to time): for what reason do you think they do so? Politeness? More positive replies to THEIR chance threads, as Hiyo_bye suggested?

PS: Yep, it does mean Interstate 495!

A) Occasionally people are mean, but in general people are really optimistic. I think that's a good thing, as otherwise chancers might be discouraging someone from applying--after all, there are a couple of weird how-did-he-get-in? cases every year.

ladies and gentlemen,...to the poster who said not enough 2100s, 3.6 gpas...i got a 2180 with a 3.3....i agree that there are the ridiculous people on here w. 2400 and 4.0s and the most ridiculous extras that want to be chanced..when the truth is people with scores like mine do get into ivy's because the averages to most schools are well within striking distance for me (chicago in particular)

i need help please i got numerous questions rolled up in my post..feel free to adress any of them....step into my office here please!
