Thanks for taking the time to look at my post!

There are two schools I'm looking at. I won't list all of my stats but I'll tell you some things about myself.

I attend a selective public boarding school for visual arts in SC.
I will have a strong arts portfolio/supplement.
I'm Hispanic.
My hometown is in a rural area of South Carolina.
I'll assume I'll have a good essay.
My home high school did not let underclassmen take AP classes- my cumulative GPA is moderate (3.52) my current GPA is fair (3.78)
Household income is ~49,000
I travel often to other countries.

There's a lot more to that, but just to get the gist of who I am. I tried to list all of my "hooks" but I have weaknesses as well.

I'm trying to decide whether to take a chance and apply to Yale EA or go a little bit more of a safer route and apply to Cornell ED directly to the art department (Academics and portfolio go 50/50)

So basically my questions are:

What are the lowest possible test scores to get accepted, in your opinion?
How much higher can I get my cumulative GPA?
And, I'd like to follow my heart and apply to Yale even though I don't stand much of a chance at all (hey, someone's gotta win the lottery :P) but then again, I don't want to give up my chances of getting into Cornell ED if I apply early and get denied to Yale.

What are your opinions?
Thanks!

what are your ECs
what is your classrank
whatis your Sat/ACT score

I go to a two year arts school so my ECs are limited. I’m in CATS (connecting service through art) which regularaly does community service around the city. I’m also in International Relations club and National Honors Society. I also participate in a youth group/younglife since 6th grade and plan to be a Wildlyfe (middle school) leader next year. I am running for student council this year.

Due to our schedule there’s no job oppurtunites (however I’m trying to make a business with my photography) and no sports. Three days a week I have classes extending until 830 at night.

My school doesn’t rank, and ill be taking the ACT for the first time in June

I’m sorry, but I don’t think there is any real chance of you getting into Yale unless you get a 35 or 36 on the ACT or a 2350+ on the SAT.
However, you could be competitive for Cornell with a 33/34 or a 2250+

NOTE: Cornell ED is ABSOLUTELY not a SAFETY for you! You almost certainly won’t get in unless your test scores are TOP TOP TOP of the line.

Oh no, I do understand that neither of these schools would be safties or even matches. Yale would be the highest reach I could probably possibly go for haha, but I just feel like I should try. I’m not sure.

My saftie school at the moment is Virginia Commonwealth University (excellent art department). I’m just looking at Yale and Cornell because I want an environment similar to the high school i’m currently at. I realize that there are plenty of schools with strong academic and arts department, with wonderful supportive people and etc. But I’ve always been in love with Yale and Cornell, so I absolutely have to apply even if the chances are 1000:1.

I really do appreciate the criticism. Reality checks are important. Thank you.

Any other advice/comments?

My advice is to take your standardized tests first and then check back. VCU has an Amazing art program. I live in VA and it is top notch around here. But your GPA is going to hold you back from Yale and Cornell.

Will do. I took the ACT in 7th grade and got a 20 on it, so I’m hoping for at the very least a 28, which will give me information on what I can study to prep for my fall ACT. Of course, it might not work out that way, but I’ll let you guys know.

VCU is excellent, I got the opportunity to visit over spring break and I really enjoyed it.

As for my GPA, I could say that it’s my old school’s fault for not letting us take challenging courses, but it’s also my fault for not putting in that extra hour or two of studying that could’ve made it a point higher. So, I can’t put everything on excuses :/

A 20 in 7th grade is good though, so if you study you might do better than a 28. Don’t worry, just work really hard now and you’ll never know what will happen.

Yeah, I really hope so. I’m weak with math, so I’ll have to see. Thank you for the supportive advice!

Math isn’t my subject either right now. Anytime and your welcome.
