in your school, is surfing wikipedia considered a sign of nerdiness?

as in, do some of the less academically able classmates yell out "nerd" or something like that if you say that you're going to surf wikipedia? do the weaker students even surf wikipedia? I'm talking about the students who don't take honors and aps, who aren't planning on going to college, btw

Nobody actually surfs wikipedia at my school...

Why would you want to surf wikipedia, why not just the internet?

My school has wiki blocked...

Knowing the word "prevalence" is a sign of geekiness and will result in a b*tching out.

I want to move on with my life soo bad...

in contrast to unleashedfury, wikipedia has basically blocked my entire school network...kids in other schools trashed like 100 articles so the entire server is permanently blocked from changing or altering articles.

Nah, everyone uses it.

Everyone uses it...
and imdb.

you'd be better off saying you searched the internet, as wiki-p is technically the internet. being too specific about educational/research-related things around people who don't care much about grades or learning often leads the the word "nerdiness." just something i noticed. dumb down whatever you say. so if you're talking about something on the web, be as general as possible, saying "google" or "internet"

yea, it's stupid how people associate researching things with nerdiness, but it's how some ppl are...

We use Wikipedia, but I doubt anyone surfs it for fun. Even if they did, I doubt they would tell people about it.

Most people at my school don't know what Wikipedia is.. When I used it (had to use some back ways to get there) for a research paper most people were amazed. It's blocked on our school system normally though.
I don't surf it for fun but I'm sure my fellow classmates would definitely laugh about it and call me a dork/geek...

Then again.. They think I'm an over achiever for actually doing my homework so, not the best people to take an opinion from

People use it all the time secretly for projects and crap, or if they need to know something obscure, but nobody "surfs" wiki.

Kayleigh, how did you ever get away with that on a research paper? Most English teachers won't even allow you to use a print encyclopedia.

My network has it blocked too. It makes it really inconvenient for when I need a quick definition.

Sometimes for fun, I like to just keep clicking the random article button and read as much as I can. Or I'll look at one article and read it in English, Spanish, and Esperanto and compare them. That's all the surfing I do.

I surf wiki on occassion. Sometimes the articles you find can offer a lot of good or interesting information. Little random facts are always good to know, and when you are super bored, it doesn't hurt to have something to do.

oh my god, you people don't find reading wikipedia articles fun? It seems like A LOT of people I know do. after all...

http://xkcd.com/214/

I'm dead serious.... I've wasted hours and hours of time reading Wikipedia articles.

there are a lot of "I waste too much time on Wikipedia" articles on facebook.

So it seems like it would qualify for inclusion in the "nerdiness" category - if most of you don't even find surfing it fun.

Can't believe no one here has surfed wiki... So many interesting things to read

hell no. if anything, it's the sign of ultimate slacker-tude. "I just wikipedia'ed my whole English term paper. I didn't read one of those freakin books!"

JBVirtuoso:
My English teacher's have never said no enyclopedia's. Actually, I think she semi-suggested these sort of Encyclopedia things our Library has.. I don't go to a top of the line school though..

I had to do a paper on School Uniforms and I used it to find the basic guidelines for various countries, then looked up more sources from the info I got. I got a high A on the paper so..

I'd never do a paper solely off of there too, I really only half trust the information sometimes.. It was a good place to start for my paper though..

its considered a sign of laziness at mine because it means you will probably copy and paste your essay

I love to surf wikipedia; I used to do it when I was a library aide (y'know, instead of helping people find staplers and things). I don't know anyone else who does it, but it's not exactly a hot topic of discussion when we can gossip about which freshmen have the most STDs.
