Inapropriate Alumni Interview Behavior

First off I know this isn’t really any of my business, and I may just be jealous, but I heard some information today that rubbed me the wrong way.

One of my classmates did her alumni interview today for an Ivy and said that the guy pretty much told her that she would get in because he had good grades and decent extracurriculars and the interviewer was good at getting kids from our area into the Ivy League. I get it, she’d be a strong candidate anywhere and our town is one of the poorest in the country and we’re URM, but this isn’t really appropriate behavior from an interviwer right? I mean there are perfect candidates who gey rejected every year but he still strongly implied to her her that she’s gurranteed admission because of affirmarive action. This kid is great and I’ll be very happy for her if (when really) she gets in, but it doesn’t seem right.

Don’t sweat it – alumni interviewers are reputed to have a negligible role in admissions. So many times, alumni interviewers are dismayed to learn the student they “went to bat for” was rejected. Some cynics see alumni interviewing as a way to keep alumni engaged, and whose role is to alert Admissions to the truly unstable or otherwise inappropriate applicant, who might not otherwise appear that way on paper. It is nice for your friend to get that encouragement, but not something anyone should take to the bank.

This is how ugly rumors get started. Don’t perpetuate that myth.

@Rdtsmith Are you refferring to me? The interviewer? @Midwesternmomofboys ? I’m not sure what you mean by rumors or myths.

Your friend may have misread or exaggerated what he said. He has almost no influence. I’d take it to at least mean that your friend is competitive in the pool of applicants. But the competition is fierce, and he isn’t actually in admissions.
