On the Common App, when it asks for your income bracket, how necessary is it to be accurate?
Assuming that I do not know how much my parents make, could I just write something like $50,000 - 99,000 even though I know it’s actually nearer to $250,000 [somewhere around there, don’t know exact amount]. Does this:
a) have a high potential to cause a college to rescind my acceptance
b) all into a situation where I “better not risk it”
c) unlikely to have any significant impact
I’m asking this because I know colleges [rightfully] expect more from higher income students, also because I’m not comfortable sharing my families info with many different colleges/having it “out there”.
Since you won’t be asking for financial aid, it won’t matter. Whether you say $50,000 or $500,000, it will still be “out there.” Schools will be expecting you to pay full list price.
It would help if you were consistent. You’re a rising senior thinking of classifying yourself as African American because your (Indian) mom was born in Libya; you’re a rising junior trying to flesh out your app; you’re an upper income family who wants to apply as a lower income student because colleges expect more from higher income students. Colleges will know what school you graduate from and what the typical profile is for students from that school, so you may as well just answer honestly.
@austinmshauri
Sorry about that, I only said I was a rising senior because it was in a WAMC thread so I thought it would elicit better responses. That was misguided, I’m not sure why I did it, my bad.
But yeah, to be clear, I’m a rising junior.
Thanks, yeah I’ve decided not to attempt to misrepresent myself in any manner as that’s dishonest and simply not in line with my moral ideals.
Thanks!
@medbsmd, It’s great you’re asking questions. That’s how you learn. Enjoy high school and let your app represent who you are. It’s better to find the place that’s a good fit for you than to try to make yourself fit some image of what you think schools want. There are a lot of great colleges out there. You’ll find one that’s right for you.
