incoming freshman--16 units doable?

pls see the folowing from http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/csugrad/:</a></p>

lemme do the math for u: (2 courses from Required Courses)(4 units) + (2 courses from Breadth courses)(4 units) + (2 courses from additional upper divs)*(4 units) = 24 units of cs upper divs at minimum, more if u take 150 or 152 which are 5 units apeice

16 units from lower divs + 24 units from upper divs = 40 units of cs classes required altogether which is more than what OP would have if he folowed ur advice and did (4 units)*(8 semesters) = 32 units. ■

all i was responding to earlier was ur misrepresentation that:

its mathmetically imposible for an l%s cs major to take no more than 1 cs class per semster.

no ofense but ur link to sample schedules is for eecs majors and the op is in l%s cs so ur totaly wrong

im just advising him to double up while its easy rather than waiting til its harder in upper divs to double up

I will NEVER equate a neurological problem with intelligence; however, as you previously mention, the issue does cause you to work slower. Computer Science is difficult (I am sure that you ARE SMART ENOUGH), but it also takes time and if spelling takes you time then doing the projects can also take you time. There is a disability center at Berkeley which you should check to have benefits. If you want to take that heavy amount of CS courses go ahead. The post is to help jesskidding and not judge her schedule as easy when it is a standard schedule for an incoming freshman.
@dina4119 I agree with your comments, but I feel that there is no way for this individual to understand. I am glad to see that there are other fellow Berkeley Golden Bears who speak up. I feel that one of the biggest struggles freshman confront is that there are some students who take a lot of units and make others feel like they have to take a heavy load which can lead to a low GPA

@jesskidding Follow your own pace. You are doing well and as you made have heard, CS is becoming cap so worry about your GPA and not how many units you take per semester.

@worrygooseB, I like to speak up because I was one of those freshmen who overloaded and then ended up regretting it because I underestimated the difficulty of the classes.

Also, I might add that OP did not say he/she was in l&s and the sample schedules I linked to are indeed for the college of engineering (most cs students are in engineering so I assumed OP was) but are actually also linked to on the l&s cs page. But anyways, your schedule is fine the way it is, you will graduate on time, most everyone I know did or will!

teh op says shes l&s cs at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/16196617-post11.html:</a>

can u tell me bout the overloading experiences coz im open minded … my view mighta ben colored by the fact that my two friends at cal – one thats a sophmore now and the other graduated and at a startup – recomended that i double up while its easy coz they did that as freshman. but the one who alredy graduated also doubled and tripled up even in uper divs coz they thought those were marginaly harder but rly managable… i plan to do that too coz i wanna take as many cs classes as i can before i graduate…

Wow lol. I’m too lazy to read all this. Um I’m in L&S CS, I was thinking of the Web Design Workshop (which I saw an ad for on FB). And yeah I’m hella worrying about my GPA T_T

Also I have taken AP Calc AB and BC. But I’m still going for Math 1A…Math 1B is being taught by Vojta and I’m not so sure if it’s a good idea to take it with him. He has terrible ratings on ratemyprofessor and I thought I MIGHT be able to get a higher GPA if I took Math 1A first semester and then Math 1B second semester with the hope of getting a better professor.

whggha: Please, calm down, and stop getting angry. People are giving you advice. Stop being stubborn and stop correcting others who have more experience than you. They’re here for a reason: to help.

Also thanks to everyone who gave me a solid answer haha. =) I think I’ll try the 16 units. The DeCal shouldn’t be too heavy a courseload hopefully!

ur confusng robust dicussion with me being angry and stubern. if u bothered to read my post just abov:

u’d kno that im very receptive to peoples advice when they make sense…also they may seem to have more experience but dina4119 has been makin a number of mirepresentations about how an l&s cs student can take one cs class per semester which is mathemaically imposible as i proved above

Definitely a good choice to 16 units in freshman year. As a high school junior I did 21 units and made it through. It will take away some of your free time to experience the college lifestyle.

I was searching for the decal to suggest it to our son when I stumbled upon the Pokemon Academy DeCal. I scratched my head. I’ll just email him this whole thread.

^They also have a decal that teaches you Elvish (not sure if it’s still around)!

What was your AP score?

If your AP score was high enough to skip 1A and/or 1B, you should review the old final exams for those courses. If you know the material well, it would be better to skip them. Lots of students retake their AP credit only to find that the grading curve is loaded with other students doing the same thing, so the course is not necessarily an easy A grade.

[Exams | Department of Mathematics at University of California Berkeley](Exams | Department of Mathematics)
https://tbp.berkeley.edu/students/exams/math/</a></p>

Another option if you have AP credit and do not want to take 1A or 1B this semester is to take CS 70 for your “math” course. Or take no math this fall and then continue with 1B, 54, and/or CS 70 in the spring.
