Incoming Freshman Gearing Towards First Year

Here is my situation.
Academics: I am sure I got a 5 on my AP Calc BC exam. (I AM definitely sure)
Major: Somewhere in business
Minor: Maybe music (composing music)
Character: Korean, really hard working student who aspires to make lots of money
Advantage: Works really really really hard and does anything i mean anything to get goals accomplished. Ranked 6/600 students in high school.
Disadvantage: English ( I immigrated to the US when I was in 4th grade but I never could speak with concise, effectiveness. However, I managed to pull A's in AP English and Honors English. Sometimes, my sentences were awkward because my thoughts first come through in korean and then, I try to translate korean into english)
Disadvantage #2: I am short. 5ft 6in~ 168cm?

Here are my questions
1. If I get a 5 on my AP Calc BC exam, do I have to take Calc over again? Even if I take the optional Calc exam during orientation and not do well on it because I have forgotten the material? Do you guys think taking calc over again is a good idea for the sake of getting good gradse or the future success of any future academic classes?
2. How can I prepare myself for writing better essays/papers in college? Also, how can I READ faster? (I take hours to read books/papers)
3. What are the keys to success in the first year of Indiana University? Is it possible to maintain all A averages? If so, can you tell me how hard it is to achieve it?
4. Will it be hard to concentrate at IU???
5. Is there student ranking at IU??

You will be exempt from M119/M211 and M120/M212 (Calculus I and Calculus II, respectively). I don’t think it’s completely necessary to take advanced Calculus in order to have good fundamental math for business.

The best way to improve reading skills is to read daily publications such as the Wall Street Journal (good for business majors) and/or your daily paper. To improve writing skills, you could look at some term papers written by college students around the nation and try to emulate the things that made the essays effective (or avoid the things that made the essays ineffective). When I write an essay I like to take my time and think about interesting ways to draw the reader into the thesis - many teachers can accurately predict the quality of a paper simply by reading the first paragraph.

There are many keys to being successful at IU. First and foremost, you should be prepared to take a rigorous schedule with difficult classes and put in the effort to do well in them. You seem like an excellent student already so you shouldn’t have much problem with this. Another important factor to your success and happiness at IU is your ability to make friends. I don’t think that will be much of a problem for you either since IU has a very tight-knit community of Asian students and people from different races tend to get along better here than most universities. Nonetheless, finding friends on your intellectual plane will be an important goal to achieve while at IU. It will be almost impossible to achieve a 4.0 at the business school since they are purposely trying to weed people out by making the courses more difficult. However, you can still achieve a very high GPA (3.7+) by applying yourself and staying focused.

Depending on what dorm you get into, it may be hard to concentrate with the stereotypical “party atmosphere” but there are many places that people go to study that are much easier to concentrate than the dorms, such as the business school library or the main library. It may take a good while to find a good place to study, but you’ll do it eventually.

I don’t believe that there is an explicit ranking system at IU. Certain distinguishments can be awarded to recognize high GPAs but there is no ranking system as far as I know.

Hi, I am curious to know why you chose IU.. you seem to have a great HS track record

I am pretty sure you will be exempt from m-119.. .but not m-118 but dont worry m-118 is not that difficult if you keep up with your homework and studies.. I got an A on it..

I had the same problem with you… my writing and reading was realy even though I was born in America but I managed to get a B+ at W131 by going to my teachers office hours many times asking him to look at my essay, give me any recommendations, etc.. probably a week and a half to 2 weeks before the essay was due… I also went to the academic help sessions where a graduate or undergraduate english major will help you with your essay (they won’t do it for you but they will help you organize your thoughts, etc)

self-sufficient.. you know what to do
