Incoming Freshman - LS 1 vs. Chem 14A?

I’m an incoming freshman at UCLA as pre-med Neuroscience, and I went to orientation a while back and signed up for classes (ge cluster, math, and another ge). I wasn’t too happy with the other GE I got because a) it’s not really something I’m interested in, and b) I wanted to get ahead on pre-reqs for my major and pre-med instead of taking basically 2 GE’s and a math class. Right now I’m looking to get into Chem 14A with my second pass, but if I don’t:

  1. What's the process to get into a full class once the year starts (Chem 14A)?
  2. Is it advisable to take LS1 as a fall quarter freshman instead of Chem 14A?

Thanks!!

It seems like a lot of people wait to take LS1 as it isn’t a pre-requisite for many other classes. When I was in it my discussion section was mostly sophomores and juniors, with some seniors, so keep in mind you would be competing against them. That being said the material was doable and I think it would be a reasonable class to take as you adjust from high school to college. Make sure to leave enough time for the weekly lab reports.

For 14A, people are bound to drop so attend lecture in the meantime (though honestly you don’t have to if it’s podcasted), and keep an eye on the registrar so you can add when there’s an open spot. Professors in the chemistry department can’t give out PTE numbers, but if you’re able to get on the waitlist you’d be in a good position I think.
