Hey guys, the PSU admission process can be pretty crazy, if you have any questions I will do my best to answer them. Especially Architecture and Landscape Architecture students.

I just got accepted into the Architecture program and its my first choice…anyways I have a few questions.

Do they offer a lot of financial aid to architecture students?
Where would you reccomend living my first year east or north?
Do you have time to go to football games and go out on weekends?
Have you met a lot of people in this program?

This doesn’t actually go just with Penn State, but what do people mean by weighted GPA’s…my school weights them out of 6 points, but I was wondering if people are weighting their GPA’s on a 4 point scale?

you will be lucky to get any financial aid from psu no matter what program you are in. I know that for students in need, there are scholarship programs through the AIAS, a national architecture student association. I highly recommend North Halls. I originally picked East, and fortunately I just got into North for the spring semester. East is far, and its definitely not as nice as North. I had doubts, probably like what you are hearing. “It is anti-social, no life, weird kids, etc.” but honestly when there is a blizzard outside and you are walking back at 4 in the morning… you wish you were at North. I am in Landscape Architecture and literally everyone is at North. People who are at East wish they were at North. Football games, yes, you have enough time for them. However, weekends are relative to each person. If you want to party, go out, join a frat, etc… good luck. Most weekends of my Architecture friends are spent in studio, except for a few football games on Sunday. Architecture is a demanding major, and it is definitely not for the weak hearted or people who aren’t absolutely in love with it. Expect to be tested, but the time put in is definitely rewarded with great results. People, people, people…The studio culture of landscape architecture and architecture is unlike any other college experience. When I explain both majors to people, I tell them that its a completely different college experience. People in studio will quickly become your best friends. You do everything together. There is generally always a tension between the LArchies and Archies but once a few cross -major friendships are made, a synergy group usually arrises and the tension goes down.

Overall, pick north, go to the games, and friendships will easily be made.

I have never heard of a 6 point weighted GPA, but when people say they have a 4.1, 4.25, they are usually counting it on a 4 point scale. Where A’s in AP classes and honors courses are worth 5 points when averaging a GPA. So for example…

AP Calc- A (5)
AP Econ- B (4)
US Government-A (5)
AP Lit & Comp- B (4)
Photography- A (4)
-------------------> 22 points/ 5 courses =4.4 GPA

hope that helps

my status changed to "We have received your application; we may require additional information. If so, we will be contacting you by email or letter. "
What does it meann
I am freaking out.

swetha93

did you just submit your app? what was the message before this current one? from what i remember, this was the first application status that everyone gets. basically saying that if you missed anything or they need more info they will let you know. so basically standard stuff. should not freak out. but let me know what the status was before this. but from what i remember this is standard and not unusual

The status before this went something like :
Your application is being reviewed. . .
and something more,i dont remember hehe

This is a general housing question … I will be placing a deposit this week.

Which would you recommend: South or Pollack?
I am a female but want a coed freshman dorm thats fun but not too wild like I hear East is. Do both Pollack and South have freshman only dorms?

I will not be choosing to room with anyone I know. Does Penn State have a compatability questionnaire type of thing to match you with a roommate?

I know it’s only a request and may end up in East anyway, but do you think my chances are good to get into Pollack or South by putting in my deposit now?

Thanks!

Thanks so much for responding-- it makes sense now. Do you think Penn State weights the GPA’s like you described?
And are AP and Honors the same thing?
I’ve taken almost all honors and 2 AP.

Also, do you think college credits are weighted more? As in, I took a math class at my state’s university and got a A-… Is that weighted?

swetha93, dont freak out it is standard procedure and all you have to do now is the hardest part; WAITING! good luck

LucyLou, Pollack and South are both nice and have their advantages. I do not believe there are freshman only dorms but i do know that this is where a good majority of Sophomores and Juniors who live on campus do stay. South is right on College Ave which is really nice and classes are generally close. Pollock is a bit more out of the way. I would choose South. There is no roommate compatibility form unfortunately. However roommate switches are not hard to complete if you have the right people and there are always open rooms up to switch with, and a good majority are in South and Pollock. Yes, you should have a decent chance at getting into Pollock if you do it asap. When dealing with PSU it is best to do everything ASAP; this you will learn.

Jme462, Penn State itself does not weight your grades, they kind of just go with what your transcripts say; generally there is a weighted and unweighted gpa listed. AP and honors are technically not the same thing, from where I am from. The grading system where an A is a (5) is the same, but if you take an AP class, there is always a test to follow where you can get college credits. In honors classes there are not any tests that proceed the completion of the course. If you have taken all honors and AP, that is great and shows them you are up on your academics. Actual college credits are a different beast. If you took a college math class at the university itself, this no longer counts as high school credits or is included in your GPA. It is now your first official college grade. When you get your official transcripts updated on elion later in the year, it will show up as 3.0 credits and will either be directly equivalent to a PSU course or counted as a GE credit. if it is counted as a PSU equivalent then you are exempt from that course, if it is a GE credit then it is treated as an elective credit and you are that much closer to graduating. However, if it was a course that was offered by your high school and then sanctioned by the university, generally it will count as both an AP course, and college credits.

There are several in Pollack and they are a good way to meet people. I have not heard of anyone requesting an SLO and not getting assigned to that dorm.

Thanks for the responses! I received info on the Discovery House SLO beacuse I am a confused soul and have no idea what I want to major in …therefore I am in the Division of Undergraduate Studies Do either of you know anything about this SLO? I think I read it is in Pollack? I think I prefer South but also want to be with as many Freshman as possible. Also, I read that the sororities are in Pollack and East. How does this affect the atmosphere of these dorms? I’m kind of feeling that sororities are not my thing but I don’t want to be judgemental :)

Discover House is in Pollack, but I’m afraid I don’t know too much about it. (My S was in another SLO, which I think was great for him as a freshman.) It sounds like it might be just the thing for someone who doesn’t know what they want to major in. There are sororities in Pollack, but there are also seven SLOs, so I wouldn’t think the sororities set the tone for the place.

How is the LEAP program? I signed up for the American National Government pride. What should I expect? Also, when do you get assigned your roommate for summer session?

I live in Virginia, so if I were to go to PSU, I would be a OOS student. I really want to go to PSU, but my parents are hesitant because of the cost. How much financial aid will PSU give to a student who will be majoring in education?

can a psu dormroom bed accomodate a rack raiser? was it common for people to have lofted beds?

What can you tell be about " BE House"? ALso is it mandatory for OOS to make atrip for advising day? Thanks

Hi,

When do you hear back about whether or not you got the dorm you applied for? Also I see people getting notifications about the advising day, is it through mail or in my pennstate? Because I live abroad and might not receive the mails right away.

Also, will I have no classes to choose from if I arrive late?
