Hello I will be attending UCR in Fall 2010 and I have applied for the Pentland Residence Halls specifically the honor halls inside of Pentland. I was admitted with the Chancellor's scholarship and I have been admitted to the Riverside Honors program from which I believe gets me priority registration. As well as this I have passed around 8 AP tests from High School which will give me college credit at UCR. I went on their websight and totalled all of the tests and their worth and I will be starting with roughly 50 units.

I was wondering how long it will take for me to begin my major as well as if I would start at the near Junior status?...

As well as this, am I elligible for a lower division transfer for UCLA or UCSD if I simply complete one semester at UCR?....

Also what type of Extraciricular activities/sports are available at UCR other than the Honor's Program?...

Last one-Will the honor's program/dorms degrade the social experience at UCR?...

I didn’t but I was reading around and they were saying that from AP credits some students are elligible to transfer sooner than others. I have a lot of credits so I was wondering if anyone else had been in the same situation.

It is possible that you could transfer to UCSD as a sophomore transfer (given that your hs stats were decent and you get ~4.0 your first quarter), but most likely you will need to wait 2 years to transfer. UCSD you can probably get into, UCLA is more of a toss-up.

Don’t go to UCR thinking you will be able to transfer, because 80% of those people fail and end up at UCR for four years.

Yeah I definitly understand the difficulty of transfering, and it’s always just another option. UCR seems like a great school, it’s just sort of a prestige issue. But who knows I may not even want to transfer after I actually go there. I’m just trying to plan ahead.

Cali-did you transfer or have you been at UCB for your entire college career?

I understand your concern about the prestige issue, it’s pretty much reason #1 (among others) for my own transfer situation. I thought I would fall in love with UCSC and want to spend all 4 years there and maybe not ever need to transfer, but, haha nope never happened.

I’m a UCSC–>UCB transfer actually. I don’t mean to make you feel like there is no hope, because there is plenty of hope. If you can seriously knuckle down and get good grades in your classes (preferably As), you’ve got a good shot at the better UCs. Just realize it takes a lot of work :)

Thanks cali, and congrats on your transfer! Do you mind posting your ucsc stats such as gpa, major, units, etc so that I can see what to shoot for because I have heard UCB is hardest to transfer into so if I can achieve what you did maybe I have a chance.

GPA: 3.9 (as of Fall update, they only look at your first year grades + Fall quarter)
Major: Econ
Major Pre-reqs: Finished as of Summer '09 (Important that you get these done ASAP)
UCSC GEs: Done as of Spring '10
ECs: Very involved in on campus activities (leadership roles, part-time job, etc).

It all depends on GPA and Major. Some majors you can get into Berkeley with a 3.0, other majors , like Econ for example, require a 3.8+. You also need to make sure you finish your major pre-reqs so they can see the grades that you earned in these classes.

There is a lot of good information on the UC-Transfer forum. I will also probably make a blog/thread about UC–>UC transfers in the near future that may help.

“I was admitted with the Chancellor’s scholarship and I have been admitted to the Riverside Honors program from which I believe gets me priority registration.”

Is the first orientation date only for people who were accepted to the Honors program? I received the Chancellor’s scholarship but didn’t apply to the Honors program, and I assumed I could still attend the first orientation date.

The Orientation website says The 6/30-7/1 session is only open to students who have been designated as Regents, Chancellor’s or Highlander Scholars, and those who have been admitted into the University Honors Program…

The and part threw me off, but I thought the site was saying the session is open to you if you qualify in one of the four categories. I assumed it was possible to be in Honors without receiving any scholarships, but now I’m having second thoughts…

Also, I don’t need to take the MAE because I passed the AB exam, but I don’t know how to send AP scores. I remember filling out the school code when I took the test this year, but will those get sent, or do I have to do something else too? And if they get sent, do the ones from the previous years get sent as well?

@liawss if you recieved the chancellors scholarship yoh are indeed able to go to the 6/30-7/1 registration. That’s when i’m going. You don’t need to be part of the honors program to go. And congrats on passing the ap calculus or precalculus test I wish my school could have offered those. To send them you must use collegeboard and use their ap score sending system which unfortunatly cost money. Which housing are you staying in?

If you do a year at UCR you’ll end up falling in love with it anyways and probably end up staying. You would be surprised how many people I met the first month saying ‘oh I am going to transfer’ and then two quarters later absolutely love the school.

UCR’s engineering is pretty decent. I don’t know much about chemical engineering major but they have a 5 years B.S. + M.S. program for chemical engineering which is pretty attractive

Wow that is pretty nice, I’ll have to figure out all of the prereqs for it though so I can start taking immediatly. Do you know what the maximum unit load at ucr is?

Thanks for the answers and the congrats! I usually don’t like to brag, so I was trying not to sound like I was showing off when I was making that post lol. Maybe I’ll see you at Orientation; you’ll be able to tell who I am by my atrocious social skills. ;)

I’m actually living off campus. I submitted my SLR minutes before the deadline and received an e-mail saying I didn’t submit it. Now, I have to call them, and I’m dreading it…

ETA: And of course there’s a busy signal to make my torture last longer…

If you set your mind to transfer from ucr, you will do it. I came into ucr thinking that i will transfer into a better uc, and this fall i’m transferring to ucsd. It really was a great experience to be at ucr but its really up to your decisions for the future and opportunities after graduating.
