Thanks to Justmehere, who sent me the link to a PowerPoint Tulane uses for financial aid presentations. It makes it very clear that the PTA and DHS will now cover tuition AND fees. So that's a nice bump for those fortunate enough to receive one of these scholarships.

The same presentation also said the Community Service Scholarship is still $5,000-$15,000 but the admissions site says that has been bumped up to $20,000. I think the latter is correct, but if someone gets official word one way or the other, please let us know. I'll do the same if I find anything out.

ALSO:
If anyone was present when the Tulane presentation (2014-2015 financial aid information) was given, would you please let us know if the administration mentioned whether the bump for PTA and DHS only applies to those from the incoming Class of 2018? Curious as to whether winners from the Class of 2017, for example, will now get their 2014-2015 fees paid.

That would be good for others to know, I am sure. Too late for me! I know that they don’t bump up the award amounts for Presidential, etc. when they change from one year to the next, but this seems different somehow. It will be interesting to find out.

I just looked it up and Tuition & fees for 2013-14 is: $46,930. But it also lists $1,036 under “Miscellaneous.” What do you think “Miscellaneous” is?? That’s a pretty precise number.
Also, in case anyone was wondering, decisions for PTA and DHS typically come out around February 20th.

Misc. is what they think the average student spends on just “stuff” during a semester. Movies off campus, personal shopping, hair care, etc. It is oddly precise, I would guess they are taking a percentage of some other number. Or that they started with some round number at some point and increased it by something resembling inflation every year.

After not hearing back from Tulane about whether fees might be covered for the Class of 2017 PTA winners in Fall 2014, I checked Tulane’s Financial Aid page again. Sadly, the Class of 2017 PTA winners will NOT have their fees covered like the Class of 2018 PTA winners will starting in Fall 2014. From Tulane’s website:

“The scholarships cover full tuition (plus mandatory fees for those INITIALLY enrolling at Tulane in the fall of 2014)”

I do not know if the information was perhaps there before, but the page was last modified on December 10, 2013.

If I ever hear back from Tulane and hear differently, I will post again.

Well, that’s a shame for the previous recent winners, but like I said it is consistent with how they have treated other scholarships. At least they do increase with tuition. The fixed amount ones like the Presidential on down do not.

Hello. I was wondering if anyone knew if the PTA and the DHS were considered together. As in, will the acceptance of one automatically remove you from the acceptance pool of the other? Or are they separate evaluations? Would it be possible to win both? Not that it should matter since the award amount is the same, but I was just curious.

No, you cannot win both. That would make no sense. If you get full tuition and fees from one, what would the prize for the other one be? They aren’t going to pay you a profit of about $30,000 to attend college.

I guess what you meant was would they allow the same person to win both but only award one prize. The answer, I feel quite sure, is no. To do so wouldn’t contribute towards Tulane’s goal of using these awards to provide a strong incentive for the “best of the best” to attend Tulane rather than Harvard or Penn or Duke or …

All the strong attributes that leads to a winner of these awards are qualities Tulane wants as much of as possible! I was talking to my D today about a related issue and I caught her up on the new terms of these awards as well as the new Stamps. In the course of that conversation she mentioned how many of her fellow winners she had met that chose Tulane over Yale, Penn, Vandy, Stanford, UMich, and others she couldn’t remember off hand but were in the super selective group of universities. I know some that turned down Chicago, Harvard and WUSTL (well, my D turned down WUSTL but there are a couple others I have met on here in the past).

They are separate evaluations, but the DHS is awarded first and any winners of that would automatically be withdrawn from the PTA pool, I feel sure.

“They are separate evaluations, but the DHS is awarded first and any winners of that would automatically be withdrawn from the PTA pool, I feel sure.”

^^ This is exactly what I was wondering. Thanks so much!

It might be helpful to add that the DHS is reviewed by the DEANS of the five UNDERGRAD schools; whereas, the PTA is reviewed by a scholarship committee, led by the DEAN of ADMISSION.

It would be interesting to know how cross-applications are handled.

hellothere66 - The following link has specific wording that addresses your question, [Tulane University - Tulane Dean’s Honor Scholarship](http://tulane.edu/financialaid/grants/dhs.cfm) The first sentence in the third paragraph states “Students may not receive a Dean’s Honor Scholarship in combination with any other Tulane merit scholarship”. The same wording is on the page for the PTA.

Justmehere - I would imagine that either a list of the DHS winners is sent to Admissions and they just pull their PTA and/or CSS submissions out of the pool, or the information is added immediately to their admissions file on the computer and would be seen by the PTA committee before they would have made the award to that student.
