INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATED, please help! thanks!

I REALLY want to be a direct admit to Kelley, but my school curriculum is preventing me! "I need a 3.5 GPA and a 1270 SAT!"

I have the SAT portion covered, but the GPA part is killing me. I go to one of the hardest schools in the nation, "a very prestigious private school." BUT IT'S SO HARD TO GET A 3.5! Here's the part that irritates me! I have a 3.3, BUT MY SCHOOL MAKES YOU WORK TO EARN A "C!" I'm in all Honor classes with some APs, but of course I don't think Kelley cares as long as you have that "3.5 IN ANY CLASS OR SCHOOL!"

A 3.3 in regular classes is equivelant to a valedictorian/4.0 GPA in all honor/AP classes student from a public school! It's driving me insane!

To top it all off, my school makes our kids work EVEN HARDER to get A's.

93-100 A
85-92 B

never gotten below that, so I don't know what a C is...

WHAT DO I DO? COULD I FLY UP THERE AND BRIBE THE DEAN OF KELLY TO GIVE ME DIRECT ADMISSION!?

I really appreciate it, I'm just soooo irritated...

I'm in the same boat as you. When I visited the school I talked to the advisor for direct admits and he said that while I wouldn't be accepted directly I could appeal the decision and then would stand a chance. I would recommend that for you as well.

You can appeal, but it's kind of unlikely they will give you direct admit. Sometimes if the W GPA is well above the 3.5 level, they will do so--but it's rare. For example, my own son took a curriculum of entirely IB (International Baccalaureate) classes and got the 3.5 needed, but had only a 1260 SAT and was also rejected on appeal.

The good news is most students who are rejected for direct admit can get into Kelley simply by doing well in the core required classes during their first semester (Math 119--Calculus, Math 118--Finite Math, BUS K201 - The Computer in Business, Bus X100 - Introduction to Management, COMM C121 - Public Speaking, and ENG W131 - English Composition). Pass 5 of those 6 courses during your first semester with at least a B average while being active in school clubs and activities and you can be accepted into Kelley early in your second semester.

Something like 70% of business students get those done fairly quickly and get accepted to Kelley. Based upon your current courseload, I would expect you to be among that 70%.

I went to Mission San Jose High, and man can those Asians take tests. I got rejected from Kelley with a 1430 SAT and 3.3 GPA (all AP and honor classes). I was pretty mad as i was also rejected from Berkeley and UCLA, but I got in everywhere else. So I am doing a year at a junior college and its sooo easy, sleeping through classes and getting 100% on everything. Planning on transferring to IU next fall.

yea those IU ppl. all they care is GPA, GPA. I mean ap classes should matter and btw how do u calculate weighted GPA?

why don't you or your gc call the admissions department and explain the grading scale at your school? why don 't you have your school send in a profile about your high school and how grades are calculated?

i would think that might help.

Alright, thanks guys, I'm going to see what I can do...

great news everyone, IU does look at weighted GPA, meaning if u have ap or honor classses, they count more..yay!

Yes, Zouman, they do consider the weighted GPA for honors/AP classes but ONLY if your school provides the weighted GPA. They will not compensate
or re-calculate your transcript and our high school will not weight grades ever. It is frustrating to think that a an easier schedule would have guaranteed a direct admit to Kelley but I have heard that only a small percentage of students are directly admitted.

i didnt get it... i even pulled the "i even play 3 varsity sports" card, and they don't care... its rediculous how much they care about gpa...

Dan, sorry to hear that. Do you mean you didn't get into IU? I'm assuming that's what you mean because it would be too soon to get into Kelley as a direct admit. What was your gpa, if you don't mind sharing that information?

This happened with my nephew several years ago. He took AP classes but had a 2.8 gpa and even his 31 ACT didn't get him in. They do want to see students who appear to be applying themselves all year rather than those who aced the ACT.

What's plan B for you now?

My son just received his IU admissions package. He is also trying to get a direct admit to Kelly. We were told it takes 2 to 4 more weeks before we will hear from Kelly on the direct admit decision. Is this your understanding also as to the process for notification? Also, have you heard about when the notification for the Hutton Honors College is sent?

Wait, did you just get rejected from Kelly or IUB in general?

Slugger, I'm wondering the same thing now. In reading through Dan's original post he says he never got below a B/92, so he for sure would get into IU. Maybe they just told him he wouldn't qualify as a direct admit?

Well thats what the thread is about so I would assume he just didn't get into Kelly. His scores match for IUB.

Gatorman, my son was a direct admit to Kelley last year, and I believe it was about four weeks before he heard from them after being admitted to IU. He was busy with football playoffs and didn't even apply to IU until the weekend after Thanksgiving, when they were very busy. Then there was a hold up over the holidays. He didn't hear from IU until January and I believe he heard he was a direct admit in February. At this point I would think there are fewer delays, so 2 -4 weeks sounds reasonable.

I'm afraid I know nothing about the Hutton Honors program, but if you post a question in a separate thread someone else may be able to answer your question. Your son sounds very bright if he's interested in Hutton Honors, so I'm sure he'll get into Kelley.
