Independent major + campus question

does barnard offer an independent/student-designed major? if so, anyone know anything about it (is it a pain to organize)?
and does anyone have any good pictures of the campus? i didn’t get to visit–all they show on the website is the one building with the fancy gate on the street…what’s behind that building (b/w claremont ave and riverside drive on the map)? is there a lawn to sit out and read besides the one right on the road?

Check out the online "campus tour" on their website. It really is a pretty campus, though small, and there is a "lawn" as well as courtyards....

don't know anything about student-designed majors....Primefactor???

Yes, the campus is so pretty. It's small but enclosed, so there's no traffic going through it and you have the whole of NYC to be the rest of your campus. Barnard is for the students, so that's really nice. I know of two lawns, one right by the main gate and one outside the Admissions office. If you go on the website you can do two types of "website" tours. One even lets you drag the mouse and gives you panoramic views of the dorm rooms! It's pretty cool! If you want to know more about Morningside Heights, and the website doesn't help, I would suggest searching for it on About.com and google. You may get less college-based info which could help.
Good luck!

I know you can do what they call a "special major," but I only know one person who did it, and they did Linguistics, which has already been designed by a professor and just hasn't gotten approval to be an official major again yet. So I don't know how hard it is to design your own. The catalog says:
"A list of courses that satisfy the special major must be approved by the Committee on Programs and Academic Standing. A special major does not necessarily involve more than one department. If it does, both departments must agree on the senior essay grade and departmental honors nomination. Obtain forms and instructions from your Class Dean in the Dean of Studies Office."

And the lawn right beside the road totally isn't beside a road in any real way. It's blocked off from the wide sidewalk by a wrought iron fence and nice, thick landscaping. It's a very serene and pretty lawn.

Primefactor, do you know anything further about majoring in linguistics at Barnard or how I could find out more about it? If not I'll just wait until I get there.

I'm definitely going to Barnard, and though I knew I'd read something about linguistics at Barnard before, I couldn't find any information about doing it as an official major.

Thanks.

Primefactor- could you tell me a little bit about the wellness floors? What are they like? thanks
