Independent Research for High Schoolers...?

I want to do some independent research, but I am only in high school. I already have found a research topic, and it is just want i always wanted to do. I am really keen on this topic, it's a thing about mental illnesses and other things that concern the brain. But I really do not know
how to develp my idea. I've already started reading about the topic I want to cover, but then?

There are no labs in my area, and also I can't ask my professor.

And how would I get college recognition through this independent research? Does research go in ECs in the common app? And what do I have to write?

thankss!

That would go in EC and probably the final report. If it’s professional enough then it might be worth submitting. My advice is to email some colleges directly or non-profit research institutes about your endeavor that are researching or performing procedures related to that area of medicine. Maybe you could approach your local hospital and ask or the local veterans affairs clinic for advice.

Look up the steps of drafting a thesis and research reporting.

Also look into qualitative and quantitative research methods.

It’s important to use the proper method of citing sources and composition format.

I was home schooled by the way. 1st grade to 8th grade.

thanks for the answer :)

The hard thing is to find research institutes and/or labs. I live in a very rural area, so i guess there isn’t any organization that promotes research…

Do you need an actual lab to do this?

idk, since it’s a research in the psychology field, i am not really sure on how to prove it…

Maybe someone here can give you advice on that if you want to elaborate.

My D did a research project in neuroscience as an independent study last year, for HS credit. She didn’t need a lab to do her research…that’s why I ask. She got a high school science teacher and a local college prof to “mentor” her, but that really just meant they approved her study plan and she met with the prof like 4x for about 10 minutes each time to discuss the research paper she did at the end.

I’m doing research right now with a professor, and it’s so much fun! If you ever have any questions, just PM me!
