Indian 2019 Chance Thread

@DarkL0rd Almost all of the known colleges offer Computer Engineering or Comp. Science as a major. Name the ones you are interested in.

@michaelite UPenn has good also it has need-based scholarship…University of Toronto…UWashigton…Are few…I know getting in them is almost impossible but they are good…What do you suggest on the basis on my stats…

@DarkL0rd University of Washington is very possible, but I don’t know if they offer any scholarships or not. Toronto is not in the US, so I have no idea. UPenn is Ivy League man, it is very difficult to get in, but yes if you do, you will get all the scholarships you need, but it is pretty unlikely, though I might be wrong. Look for private universities, as public universities rarely offer scholarships.

@michaelite @DarkL0rd

Can you comment on my college list? This is just a preliminary list:

Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, UPenn (Wharton; just for the kicks :-p ), Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Harvey Mudd, MIT, Georgia Tech, NYU, Carnegie Mellon (MCS), Williams, UC B/LA/SD and UChicago. I’m also looking at LSE in the UK but I don’t really like the London environment (I’ll keep this as a last resort if at all I get in)

I don’t really like large class sizes and I’d also prefer a liberal arts system. I want to major in math + economics/classics. I think that I’m a competitive applicant at all the places. I’m also not applying for aid at all. I think that UCSD, Georgia Tech and NYU are safeties? The rest are all reaches.

Along with that, can you also suggest which college I should apply to early to gain even a slight strategic advantage? I’m currently deciding between Harvard, Stanford, Princeton and Yale.

@mumbai98 You are right for the saftie’s…And colleges like Harvard, Stanford, Yale, MIT Cornell,and Columbia are a reach for anyone…because admission in them is all crapshoot …do you have a link where you mentioned your stats…And also I don’t know much about LAC’s so cant’ comment…

@DarkL0rd I haven’t really posted my stats yet, but here are they in a brief:

Top 1% in school, 90%+ throughout. 2320 SAT (second attempt, single sitting. First one was a 2200).

INMO, INOI, NCO - AIR 36, state rank 3. Multiple research publications (in math and computational biology; 3 are in high impact journals. One is in review at Annals of Mathematics (stupid me :-p )). Head boy, president and founder of computer and math clubs. Cofounder of a national level initiative that aims at providing basic CS education to children from an economically backward part of the society. I have played basketball and football and have captained my team and played till the district level. A paid internship (non research) at IISc. I’m training hard for the linguistics olympiad and trying to make it to the team next year.

My school isn’t really well know but we send a person or two to Ivies every year.

@Mumbai98 Your stats look awesome…But your EC’s make you look like you like CS more than maths and econ…Your research publication on Maths is the only thing that shows your interest towards Maths…Are you sure you want to major in Maths…

@DarkL0rd Yes. I’m 100% sure that I want to major in Math. I have contemplated a lot on both the majors and I have decided to pursue math. Any suggestions for safeties and matches?

@mumba98 Cornell ,Columbia,UCB,UCSD seems match…Can’t say on saftie’s…Do you need financial aid…

@DarkL0rd Rich enough to not ask for aid, poor enough to not be able to afford the entire cost. I guess I’ll take a loan. I’ll definitely not ask for aid at need aware places.

@mumbai98 Yours stats are awesome dude, but your college choices are in general pretty unrealistic. Aim for 4-5 top schools. Then target the safeties. UIUC, Purdue, Georgia Tech, UT Austin, etc can prove to be amazing safeties. As for the LAC kinda environment look at Emory, Swarthmore and Harvey Mudd among others. You have a shot at MIT, Stanford and all these places, but they are pretty uncertain. But best of luck anayway.

@michaelite Thanks for replying. So I have talked to quite a few people and here is what my current list looks like:

Harvard (SCEA - top choice), MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Yale (love everything about it), Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley/LA/SD, Harvey Mudd, Georgia Tech, NYU, UChicago, Columbia and Williams.

I have cut down on Ivies, other selective places. I know that currently, there aren’t any places that I can surely say that I will get in. This list is still a work in progress.

I’ll hopefully talk to a counsellor or someone to finalise the list. But have I made an improvement in the list?

@mumbai98 Put in some safeties. None of your colleges are absolute safeties. Do consider some of the colleges I named. And to more LAC’s. The list is pretty solid. But it is possible for pretty amazing internationals to get rejected at all those places just because it is a tougher ball game for us. UC SD appears to the slightly safe, apart from that all others are very competitive.
