I'm not Indian, but there are certain Indian girls at my school who are absolutely evil. They don't talk to anyone who isn't Indian, and they refuse to associate with people who are Indian but Christian or Muslim. One girl I know even said that if their Muslim or Christian, they aren't Indian.

But there are also some lovely Indian people, like my best friend :D

My mom speaks some Hindi, even though we're from nowhere near to India.

I go to my temple and sometimes wear traditional clothes for that. However, even though I'm Gujurati, I can't speak Gujurati well.

As for experience with Indian music and instruments, I know some of the music theory, I can identify instruments on sight, and I can play scales on sitar, but that's about it. I also hate Bollywood movies. I also dislike Indian food and Indian people who try to act like India. Although I go to India occasionally, I'm probably more American (or Canadian).

American culture is full of a lot of bull ****. If you don't want to "integrate", then don't. For example, if you're integrated to the point of talking like this: "pretending to like all this homo garbage", you might want to unintegrate the stupid, ignorant parts of our culture.

I'm Bengali. Not really culturally oriented at all, don't really care.

I've found that there's a general "keeping up with the Jones'" mentality that basically forces our culture to suppress our own actualization in order to fulfill archaic, and frankly stupid expectations.

The music is alright sometimes, I despise the food unless it's well made in which case it's amazing, the clothes are funky, and I barely speak Bengali. Whatevs.

Both those movies are crap. Don is a rip off of Godfather, except it's hammed up and made cheesy enough so as to appeal to India's unwashed illiterate masses. Infact, this is the market for all Bollywood movies so admitting you like them is basically an insult to your intelligence. Hollywood is where it's at dude. Oh yeah, those retarded song and dance sequences immediately kill the artistic integrity of any movie. No matter how good it is, when the first song starts the movie nosedives.

We don't put each other down when we rep our culture.

And to contribute to the thread: Indian girls can be fine as hell! Too bad there aren't any of those at my school.

That is such a lie...
I know a tons of ponchos que dicen que no deben decir que son mexicano.
What is more so Many of the Hispanics discriminate against each other...
For example Argentinians are famous for looking down their noses at other Hispanics. Mexicans are famous for discriminating against the Indigenous people. and then Gueros and the non-Gueros...The List goes on...
I am Mexican (or half...) and I am proud but what you say is totally false, especially if you've ever visited your country of origin...

anyways...
I live in an area with a lot of Indians, generally Indian, but Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, and Nepalese are also here.
Most of them are ABCDs (yes... I know your terminology... I've known enough to pick up a word or two too) or FOBs...

So you feel obligated to love the culture of your parents because of the color of your skin? I grew up in America so my culture is American culture.

it always leaves a bad taste in my mouth when someone puts down their own culture. practice what you want, but don't put down the culture of your very own parents.

hey,
just wanted to know if there are any indian (as in from india, not native american) ppl on these forums that do indian arts such as singing, dancing, or playing an indian instrument.

i do carnatic vocal!
[/quote]

I'm Indian and I used to learn carnatic (until two years ago). and i used to learn classical flute, too. I'm still learning classical dance, though.

I must echo the sentiments of some fellow Indians here,

Your culture does a great deal in defining you. To stray away from that which you were born and to a degree defined by is a hard and rough journey.

While what you said may be true, it had nothing to do with what I said so I don't see how you are refuting what I said.

You're just stuck on that American stereotype that all Latinos are of the same culture. Argentina and Mexico are two different cultures.

And I like how you just say Mexico is? ALL OVER Latin America both Blacks and Indigenous are discriminated.

I said we don't put each other down for repping our culture. Whether we put each other down or not for being afraid to admit that you're Latino is a different story. Someone half Mexican should know better than that.

And by ponchos, I am guessing you meant to say 'pochos?'

yeah...sorry about the poncho thing... I was out of it... pocho ;)

anyways, I don't see how it doesn't have to do with what you said.
You said Latinos don't put each other down, which I'm am saying is a lie.

You accusations have no logic behind them, I am not stuck on the fact that I all Hispanic cultures are the same. Where you concluded this idea, is beyond me.

I know there is discrimination all over Latin America, but the way some people are so up tight on this forum (not anyone is particular so don't get the Idea I'm accusing you) that is i were to say 'Pablo is stupid' people would start to denote me as 'racist'...

once again, representing our culture is the same as representing out blood. You don't have to go to you country to see thing, if you cross a few youtube video you will see arrogant remarks on how 'Mexican are the trash of Latin America' or (since you insist I give more examples then just Mexican ones) how 'Brazil is a rat hole country full of negros" etc...
We do put each other down, not everyone does.... but to say that all Latinos don't, which is the way you implied it, is a complete mistake. What makes you think Latino are so different from everyone else?

i dont think it's a bad thing to be proud of your heritage or culture.
i played volleyball and was on swim team for 9 years, i don't watch bollywood films, and ive danced hiphop for as long as i can remember.

..but ive also danced folky bhangra and bharatnatyam since i was 5, visited india every summer, and i love indian clothes.

i spent all of middle school trying to pretend i wasnt indian and being "american" ... which is pretty pathetic considering "american" doesnt even define anyone because america is such a mixed place.

you're not going to see me wearing sarees and bindis to school, but you don't have to act like you hate your culture just to fit in .. that's even worse than being a complete fob in my book.

I love being Indian. The girls are awesome. Anyway, I love Bhangra and anything Punjabi. I can sort of speak Punjabi, but I understand it well. I can also read it. I understand Hindi enough to watch movies. But, I'm a former-Sikh-turned-atheist.
