so basically, gnrfan, if you really dislike your culture that much, i think it's insecurity -- not hatred. but then again, don't say things to those who actually DO have pride, while trying to make yourself feel better. who you are is WHO YOU ARE.

so basically, me and my former "best friend" (sorry i'm just very bitter at the moment, im in free period right now and it was just lunch and she TOTALLY ignored me) made this parody of don, it's HILARIOUS. i like making fun of the bollywood movies, making parodies and junk .. that's awesome.

so the original poster asked about stuff we do pertaining to indian arts and junk -- i do karnatic vocal, used to do kuchipudi but then my teacher moved to australia and i was a stupid little 13 year old and i was like "EWW, kuchipudi", me and my friends [including my not-desi friends] sometimes compete in those random filmy competitions, oh and no one can forget SASA. i loveee SASA meetings <3. except for the fact our school doesn't let us hold those desi shows cause they're afraid people will show up with crack.

HAH. desi people and crack. it's likely, at least with some of the people in my area, but still .. i think that's a hilarious reason.

AND we take our whole group of friends, INCLUDING those who arent desi to holi every year .. we have a blast (=

... and saris and bindis is overdoing it, but there's nothing wrong with having pride and appreciating your culture and its arts. AND i doubt any of us show up with saris/kurtas and bindis to school.

... but i do love how all my parents' friends expect me to be taking 38472834823847283 APs JUST because i'm a junior and expect me to get into like harvard or something JUST because i go to a private school. and that they think berkeley's good no matter what when really, it's only its engineering and business schools that are. premed apparently sucks there.

I'm indian and proud of it. There's only a couple of indians at my school so I don't really get to do loads of indian things with other indians.

I can't wait to go to college where I'll get to hang out with other indians. If anyone wants to meet up at a college visit, PM me or something haha.

As a side note, one of the most important things in the opposite for me is respect for their own culture.

Dude, integrate into American culture. Don't do all this cultural ********. I'm Indian by the way, and all these Indians at my school pretending to like all this homo garbage like bhangra, bollywood, and traditional clothes makes be want to puke. The only thing I can tolerate is maybe classical Indian music like Ravi Shankar, but even that's pushing it.

I....freaking...love..you. I have honestly never found another indian that feels that way. You guys are such aholes this is a forum allow people to express their opinions without flamage. So the guy doesn't like his parents culture, grow up. White people are irish, english, polish, swedish, norweigan, german, french, etc, do you see them all acting up their culture? How are indians different? Because the majority of indian kids here in america are first and second generation. I myself am second generation meaning my parents were born here of indian immigrants. I am an indian but i don't like indian culture really. Bollywood i really don't like. I mean when i was little i used to but now when i found out basically everything in bollywood films are plagarised it turns me off. Seriously, you guys know the song "fanaa", i walked into an italian restaurant the other day and the heard the same tune in italian, apparently its a really old italian song. That plus a whole bunch of other plagarism is constant in bollywood.

You are what you are You are just insecure

Yea....about that...hes an american, like you and I. Calm the hell down, india is your parents country not yours. If you want to take pride in it fine. Leave him alone. I have american pride. I take pride in my country, America.

I can see darthk's view point. Soon, I think many Indians will slowly go away from the Indian culture. I mean even now some first generation people act so American and then in special occasions try to be Indian. I hate that so much.

I still think you should maybe try to do some Indian stuff to explore another side of you.

Bollywood hmm idk. Some of their movies are really really good, but others are boring. But I've loved most of the movies I've seen.

Thank you. Yes, I can agree some bollywood films are good. I liked Kal Ho Na Ho, it was quite original.

Yep im indian if you couldnt tell from my screen name lol
i do Carnatic music too but ugh i cant dance to save my life. by dance i mean bharatanatyam.
and ummm what does ap comp sci have to do with anything?! im taking that class lol.

I am Konkanni and tamil and kashmiri and goan and marithi (prolly spelled it wrong). lol. Most indians are just one type. I was born in new delhi and lived there for 7yrs.

darthk, i know everyone's entitled to their own opinion. and i wasn't saying gnrfan was wrong but i didn't like how he was all, "assimilate into american culture, blah blah blah." i just disliked how he was trying to impose his views on those of us who ARE proud of our heritage. i know i might have sounded like i was imposing my views on him, but i'm saying now that it wasn't my objective to do so.

for me and my family assimilating is letting your kids date and choose their own spouse. it's also being open to new ideas and ways of life. because honestly, some indian traditions are ridiculous.

i mean it annoys the **** out of me when indian kids walk around trying to be the next 50 cent.

and about the white people thing, idk where you live but where i live, even white people show their roots no matter what generation they are. our school is so freaking diverse you have no clue. we have different cultural activities every week and so many different types of dances. and if you go to local community fairs you see the diversity there too.

and .. i actually was born in india, my parents and i moved here when i was 6 months old. my brother was born here.

Its not about YOUR heritage, its about showing respect for every heritage...if you don't like Indian, then don't be Indian...but don't expect all the other Indians to be exactly like you
And about the comment that British, Italian....people leave their heritage behind-thats not true.
Italian people still eat pasta---not curries....and Chinese people eat Chinese food in America...have you heard of an oriental market? British people talk in their distinguishing accent---they don't try to get rid of it...and many Muslim girls still cover their faces at school
its not JUST indians---it only seems like it because as humans, we always think that we are the center of attention
But we aren't...EVERY group has a means of identifying itself, if you don't like it ok--but there's no need to have a problem when other people connect with their heritage

What about swedish( every blonde), norweigan, and polish? That's what I thought.
Do you actually know any british people? I have 2 british girls in my ib english class who try to get an american accent theyve been in america for 3 years now.
I didn't say i had a problem with "other people". I just said stop flaming the dude for saying what he wants

There's a senior at my school who's apparently a musical genius, plays the gottuvadhyam. I think he studied under Ravikiran at some point in time.

As a white-washed Chinese-American who is basically illiterate in the language of her ancestors, I think that's the coolest thing in the world. :P

I'm telugu too. fluently speak it and love telugu movies and music. play, follow, and love cricket, lol. not much into classical dance or music tho. but i still respect all the customs and beliefs of my parents (hindu prayer ceremonies, studying!! lol, no drinking/drugs god forbid, y'all know the drill, haha).

i left the motherland b4 i even started at elementary school, but i still feel strongly connected to my culture.

since alot of indians are looking at this forum thought i might as well ask, does anyone know of a good university/college (in America) that has a lot of Indians attending...>?

websites never really give good demographics...
( 25 percent Asian is not what im talking about lol)
