Hi,
I have been offered Direct Admission into the Kelley School at Indiana. I planned on living in McNutt since I heard it is the most socially active dorm and is full of out of state kids and planned on living in the Kelley Living Learning Center. However, for 2019-2020 the KLLC will be in Eigenmann. Is Eigenmann still a fun dorm or should I forego the KLLC for McNutt?
The reason the KLLC is being moved is that McNutt is being shut down due to mold, so living there isn’t even an option. From what I’ve heard, there are a lot of international students in Eigenmann, but that shouldn’t turn you away.
Eigenmann is a good option. It’s basically a straight shot to Kelley, and you should be able to walk there within 10 minutes. I think they might have a small dining facility in Eigenmann, but Wright, which has a full dining hall, is about 5 minutes away. Most of what makes the KLLC a good option is the people living there, and that won’t change no matter where the KLLC is located.
McNutt and Foster will be shut down in May for renovations in 2019-2020. The KSB KLLC will be relocated to Eigenmann. The housing portal reopens on Jan 2nd. As you go through the portal, it is important to understand the process to increase your chances of ending up in your selected dorm.
You can select a neighborhood not a specific dorm
You are asked to select if you want an enhanced dorm with AC etc. Be sure to know what your selected dorm offers.
Select if you want a thematic Comunity or an LLC
Name a roommate.
Finally, you are asked to rank your preferences.
Your roommates choices and rankings must match yours.
You will then fill out an application for a LLC at some later date. There will be short answer essay questions to answer.
If your roommate does not get accepted to the LLC you will then have the option to split off or cancel your application to the LLC. Dorm decisions generally are announced in June. LLC’s may not be announced until July.
If you visit the official IU RPS website, you should be able to see actual commuting times between key places on campus. As a freshman DA to Kelley you will still have classes all over campus - not just at the business school. The main full service dining halls that serve Eigenmann are Wright Dining Hall in Central Quad and the Woodlands in Southeast Quad. Both a bit of walk but manageable. There is also a small cafe in SPEA and also a cafe on the lowest level of the KSB graduate school. Despite the closure of all Foster residential buildings due to mold, I have been told that the Gresham Dining Hall will remain open. This is less than a 5 minute walk up the hill from the KSB. Despite whatever the “typical” population has been in various buildings in the past, that is likely to change with the closure of the 11 residences comprising McNutt and Foster due to mold. There are DA students who succeed very well without being members of the KLLC as the programs, seminars and mentoring opps from Kelley are plentiful and open to all. However, if you like the idea of special LLC programming or the convenience of living alongside other business minded students, then perhaps the KLLC is for you. Students do not have to be DA to Kelley to be accepted the KLLC. Best of luck to you with your decisions. Housing is going to be very unpredictable at IU next year due to the ongoing mold investigations and remediations. If you are serious, apply as soon as the applications for incoming students are available.
At Indiana University on-campus freshman housing bills at a variety of different rates depending on the age, renovation and amenities of the dorm building, such as AC or ensuite bathrooms vs traditional hall bathrooms, etc. There is a wide variance in dorm room rates beyond just doubles or singles. When a student applies for housing, they can typically preference price tier they prefer but that does not guarantee that is what you will be assigned. New housing rates for the upcoming academic year are usually not posted until mid to end of Summer.
You won’t be able to go by history now that Mcnutt and Foster won’t be available. Those kids are getting moved somewhere. Heck, at this rate Collins may turn out to be party central.
So students in Teter dorms were expected to completely box up all their belongings before Christmas break. This was so the mold remediation teams could treat the rooms while students were gone so as to minimize “disruption.” There are lots of stories and photos circulating that students are returning to find their rooms vandalized. Items are broken, mirrors broken, foot prints on boxes, wall items ripped off leaving damage to the wall, beds dismantled and tossed aside. It’s an unbelievable act of disrespect and unprofessionalism. If a student left that mess you better believe there would be fees and fines involved. If you are still thinking of giving IU the benefit of the doubt, then at least be warned that “FULLFILLING THE PROMISE & WE ARE IU” is a smokescreen. The assault on the mold impacted 2022 class is criminal and for those same students who already signed a contract for next year for campus housing got notified that their signed contract was voided. Yet if a student breaks a contract - $600 loss for them.
Indiana university is saying their dorms do not have to follow Indiana laws with regards to habitability.
I’ll call BS on that. There would be no proof that it was mold remediation. Dropped the kid off today. All that was on the doors where notes that stated the room had been completed.
Some student have been severely impacted. But many more have not. Some have been disrupted. Most kids are going about their daily lives.
Potential incomings if you are allergy prone or have asthma, it is highly recommended you get tested for mold allergies. Provide this medical information in the RPS Residential Programs and Services portal with the accommodation request that they not place you in a dorm that has tested positive for mold in the past.
Also very important to call RPS after you’ve submitted the documentation to make sure they’ve linked it to your account. I spoke with one parent that submitted the documentation 3 times over a semester and it was never actually on the students account (they had no record of it). Therefore student was placed in the McNutt cesspool and was very sick.
