Hi everyone I am trying to decide which of these 3 schools to choose to study business, specifically management. I vistied Indiana University and I love everything about it. The only problem is that I didn’t get directly into the Kelley school of business so I’m going to have to work really hard freshman year. I went to a competitive highschool and took some AP classes so I think I would be able to do it if I study hard. With Syracuse and Boulder I got directly into their business schools. I just don’t know if I’m as interested. I want a school with spirit, sports, traditional feel, pretty campus, and diversity (ethnically, politically). I know all 3 schools have a lot of these aspects. Also I’m from California so I’m not used to the cold, but it’s not that big of a deal to me (except I’m kind of concerned about Syracuse). I would appreciate any suggestions or info on the schools
IU-Kelley = US News #11; Colorado–Leeds = #31; Syracuse–Whitman = #42
Direct admit is a significant accomplishment for those seeking an undergraduate business degree.
What is the annual COA for each school ?
Boulder. What is admit rate to Kelly after 1st year?
I believe it’s around 50%
What is more important to you, graduating from a school or with a specific major? If it is the major then I would suggest not IU. Keep in mind, there is no right answer to the school vs major question. I was about the school. Switched majors 4 times before I found the fit. Never considered changing schools. For others they want a specific major. If you want to be a nurse, you better go to a school that has a nursing program that you can get into.
@jam2000: How strong are you in math ? Seems to be the major barrier to get admitted to Kelley in year 2.
@Publisher I am pretty strong in algebra, not as much in other math like geometry. I am kind of worried about the math but I figured I could get a tutor and maybe start studying over the summer.
@Eeyore123 I am almost positive I want to major in and pursue a career in business.
Direct admit is really great. I can only speak for Boulder though. I know it’s expensive for OOS - my daughter goes there and loves it. Really easy to get to from CA, and the snow isn’t so bad there - it usually only lasts a couple of days and then gets nice again - it’s sort of strange weather. You won’t get that at Syracuse. Lots of school spirit, and the area around there is great. So unless you got a great scholarship to Syracuse, then I would pick Boulder. Tough call with Kelly - great program but what happens if you don’t get in? I would research that a bit more.
Pick one of the direct admits.
What’s the net cost at each?
@MYOS1634 Thankfully cost won’t be much of a problem for me at any of the schools. It mostly comes down to the business program and atmosphere of the school. Which would you pick from Syracuse or Boulder?
Did you visit the other two? You may like them just as much as IU. I think Boulder has more of a party culture, and it’s geographic features are way higher than the others, and an outdoorsy cultture. I’m an IU Biz. grad but it’s been 20 years, and I don’t remember anything about direct submit. Yes the campus is beautiful, the greek houses are the prettiest by far than any I have ever seen. “spirit, sports, traditional feel, pretty campus, and diversity (ethnically, politically)” IU definitely has all this except maybe the last. There wasn’t much racial diversity when I attended. have you checked the Common Data sets for racial demographics on each? Here’s another thought…in general, recruiting activity at least at the biz school will be geared more towards the geographic area of the school (not completely, but somewhat). Would you want to live in the Midwest region after graduating? Or West (Boulder) or East (Syracuse)? If all other things aren’t pushing you in one direction or another, it’s something to consider.
Both Boulder & Syracuse have large party contingents. Syracuse, the city, is somewhat depressed & depressing while Boulder is often listed as the most beautiful college town in the country. Boulder has a thriving tech community as well.
Direct admit is the key.
Check each school for any special program that may be of interest to you.

I grew up near Syracuse, my D goes to IU and I have been to Boulder and to me since you have Direct Admit to Boulder I would vote there. IU would be my second but since you aren’t direct admit you do have to think about what would happen if you don’t get into Kelly, would you continue as a SPEA or look to transfer? If you aren’t into bad weather then Syracuse can be tough. Lake effect snow in the winter, and wind chill can be brutal. Think temps of minus 10 and wind chills of 45 below at times. Nice school but I think Boulder and IU are a lot nicer settings overall. Probably more to do in Boulder than Bloomington.
