Indiana University Bloomington or UCSB?

Hi, I want to major in business.

I got IU as a pre-business major. There is no direct-admit to Kelley School of Business for transfers. I need to get all my first year-courses with at least 3.0 GPA to get into the major and it needs 3 years to get the degree. Similar situation applies to UCSB, but it is a pre Econ&Accounting major. Different from IU, there is only one course that I need to get a B to get into the major, and it only take 2 years to graduate.

Honestly, I am more interested in business, but I am also ok with accounting. Both schools have pros and cons. However, I was thinking since I am planning to take MBA, should I save that one extra year that I need to spend in IU to get more work experiences to apply for Master. OR, majoring in business, or go to Kelley, is a better choice? I am lost. Please give me some suggestions! Thank you!

Why are you transferring?

Are you currently attending UCSB?

Are you OOS for IU? If so, will your parents pay the OOS costs of IU (or UCSB if you’re not instate for Calif).

What is the cost difference per year?

Hi @mom2college and @Dunboyne , I just finished my sophomore year in a California CC. Yes, I am an OOS for IU, but in state student for UCSB. The cost me a lot more to attend IU for the next whole three years because they charge out of state students for OOS fee no matter how many years you attend the school in IU. However, cost is not my major concern. My parents had offered me to choose the best one for me. I deeply appreciated for their support. So, I want to make the wiser choice. I have heard that Kelley has relationship to a lot of big firms, but I also heard that UCSB Econ&Accounting’s recruiting is very good, (especially to the Big4). I am wondering which career path is the best for acquiring work experiences and applying for MBA. Do you know about UCSB or IU Kelley? If so, please give me some suggestions. Thanks a lot!

UCSB.

@Dunboyne Is there a specific reason for that? Thanks!

Kelley is really impressive, but overall UCSB is a better school. Why don’t you consider the other UC schools as well? Or other midwestern schools–Ross school of business at UMich or Grainger at Wisconsin-Madison

Hi @shk909 I did apply to other UCs. I got UCSD, UCD, UCI…but I didn’t get UCB&UCLA. I had to make the decision back in June 1. I chose UCSB because I am not a pure Econ major person. I want something else with it. Others are all Econ or Business econ in irvine. I did apply UIUC as well, but some issues happened when I shipped my transcripts to them,so I got rejected. I didn’t apply Ross because I think it is out of my reach. Why do you think UCSB is a better school overall? Thanks a lot!

You’re saving a lot of money at a school/program that will give you similar job prospects, you’re ok with accounting, you have plans for grad school ($), IU loses much of its appeal for you (Kelley) if you want to change academic direction.

Thanks a lot for the advices! @Dunboyne I really appreciated it.

For Accounting? If so, not necessary to go to IU. You could go to CSUFullerton or CSULB and be fine for Accounting.
