Industrial Design at GTech

Does anyone have any experience with or perspective on this program?

My son is in his second year there, and he loves it. The professors are extremely approachable and I am surprised at the amount of personal attention they give to the students. The ID program has the feel of a much smaller college, but you also get the big university experience when you take your core classes. There are definitely opportunities for undergraduate research, and they also encourage kids to study abroad for a semester if they are interested. I think it provides a nice blend of the artistic emphasis that you would find at a SCAD-type school with the technology that is inherent at GT. You will have to take Calculus I +2, Linear Algebra and Physics to get your degree, as it is a B.S. program.

Thank you, @snsjov. Do you have any sense of how available internships are or how the graduates fare in job placement, especially out of the region?

Sorry, I don’t. If you want to do a co-op or an internship, it must be done between junior and senior year because of the nature of the studio program. Freshman year my son was introduced to numerous professional industrial designers (via field trips as well as lectures), many of whom were GT grads…so they must be getting jobs. I do know that major corporations fund research there, so that contributes to the reputation of the program.
