Industrial Engineering Internships

When you look for your first job, are recruiters looking for specific types of internships related to IE?

For example, I have found quite a few interesting internships in areas like Supply Chain Management and Manufacturing but I don't know if they would count as work experience related to IE. How about Operation Analysis internships?

I am just to clarify what looks best on a resume so that I don't have any unpleasant surprises when I try to get my first real job in the industry.

Why would Manufacturing and SCM not be related to IE? They are both large facets of IE. My first internship was in the IE dept of a railroad. Honestly, I don’t think they did ANYTHING that IE related. Maybe some Lean/SS stuff, but a lot of it was project management, statistical analysis, and a lot of good ole powerpoints/visio work…

What looks best is getting some actual project experience that you can hang your hat on. Something you did that ends up being impressive. Whether they give it to you or you end up going out of your way to get it… Ultimately you want things to talk about when it comes to interview time and you get hit with the multiple behavioral interviews that start with “Tell me about a time when…”

Thanks for your response! I was a bit concerned because IE is a very broad field, so I was not sure if maybe employers would prefer, lets say someone who has experience doing time studies vs someone who has experience doing statistical analysis.

I am going to widen my job search to various areas related to IE and try not to focus on one specific area based on your advice.
