So I was starting the SJSU and SDSU application and, as I was filling out the high school classes I have taken/am taking, it noted that the art requirement must be from a single, FULL year of a class. Or, it said that it can be from two semesters from the same discipline.
There’s the issue. I am doing dual enrollment at a local CC and have done one semester of art history and one semester of drama. This means that it is neither a year of one art class nor two semesters from the same discipline.
I was really hoping on applying to CSUs for safeties, and it just seems unfair, especially since I have a 4.41 gpa (10-12) and a 32 ACT, yet I can’t even apply to San Jose State without that art class.
What should I do?
Wow that does seem crappy–do you have a GC or someone you can talk to about it?
If those art history and drama courses were college courses, then it is very likely that either one fulfills the visual or performing art requirement for CSU (and UC) admission.
Look up the college at https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist to see if the course is listed as fulfilling the requirement, or check on http://www.assist.org to see if it is counted toward the IGETC area 3A category or CSU GE C1 category. See https://www.calstate.edu/sas/documents/admissionhandbook.pdf (page 17) for more information.
If the art history and drama were high school courses, why not take the second semester of one or both of these courses this year? There are also options of fulfilling the requirement through AP art scores.
If you attend a high school in California, it would be very negligent of the school and its counselors if it failed to inform you of the CSU and UC art requirement for frosh admission. Given the prominence of CSU and UC on the college radar in California, the college prep advice given the students in California high schools tends to have a significant focus on fulfilling the CSU and UC requirements.
The UC website indicates the following fulfills the art requirement.
College courses
Grade of C or better in any transferable course of 3 semester (4 quarter) units that clearly falls within one of four visual/performing arts disciplines: dance, drama/theater, music or visual art
@ucbalumnus , yes, those 2 semester long courses were taken at the community college. Thank you for the links, I have used assist.org a lot and will use it now to see if it transfers! And your point about the counselors is true. My HS counselor who works in the dual-enrollment program has been attending the annual UC/CSU counselor’s conference for almost 2 decades. I’m sure she would know what’s best, you’re right. Thank you!!
@svlab112 yeah, I just saw that now too. However, that is for the UCs and not CSUs. They are most likely the same, however I am not 100 percent sure because there is nothing regarding college classes on the CSU site.
The CSU admission handbook (page 17, linked above in reply #2) mentions the use of college courses to fulfill the art requirement.
From the CSU Mentor website under “HOW TO MAKE UP MISSING COURSES”
You may also complete college courses with a grade of C or better in the missing subject areas. Finally, you can earn an acceptable score on examinations such as the SAT subject examinations, Advanced Placement examinations, or International Baccalaureate examinations.
