We had looked around for cheap furniture and Ikea was the easiest for us to deal with. We checked out the stuff at our local Ikea. Then we ordered it via the telephone and had them deliver it. We had to put it together but it was pretty easy to do. Furnished the entire apartment (bed, sofa, desk w/hutch, dining table, chairs, lamp, tv stand, dresser) for under $1000 including tax and delivery.

Okay so how did you buy all of that for $1000? I am looking at the ikea site and can’t find anything that cheap! Do they have things in the store that are inexpensive or am I just not finding the good stuff? My daughter needs furniture and is on a tight budget.

Honestly use Craigslist and even Facebook. I have heard of many MANY people selling their beds, couches, tables, etc. for under $50 an item. Although it’s often “you-haul” you could try to coordinate to pick up everything in one day, and rent a uhaul for cheap. Or ask around and see if a friend has a big car they’d be willing to drive.

I believe all the items we bought are still available in the Ikea catalog. The only items we bought above the “basic” models was the mattress and the sofa. The bed frame was only $35. The dresser was like $45, desk was $69 and hutch was $20. Dinner table was $99. We spent the most $$$ on the mattress and sofa.

Since we don’t know where DS will end up after he graduates, we did not buy the most expensive stuff as he will probably give it away or toss it when he moves out of his apartment. It has been more than a year and the furniture has held up nicely. We looked at renting furniture but it was way cheaper to buy it from Ikea plus I worried about bed bugs etc.

Just found the receipt, the total was $879.66 for 14 items plus delivery charge was $105.93 (they charged tax on the delivery fee of $99). They charged $20 for gathering the stuff from the store – if you did it yourself at the store, there would be no charge but we did it over the phone since we didn’t have the time to go to the Pittsburgh Ikea store.

I love the idea of doing it on the phone, but I have not seen his room so no idea how big it is.

I did call the store and I can rent a U-Haul right there for a few hours to take the stuff to the house - so that is probably what we will end up doing.

Well I can say DS probably didn’t need the dining table as it has become a catch all for all his junk. I loved the dining table – it has two pull-out leaves (Bjurska series). I think back to the stuff we had when we first got married – heck, DS has better stuff than we did!

Not sure how expensive the beds are at IKEA (depending on size I know they can get pricey) but a good option could be to buy a frame for cheap on CL and then just get a mattress from somewhere else (like Mattress Factory). Just a thought!

DonnaMom, I do not remember where you are from, but this is what I did last year. I watched our local resale stores where I bought a love seat, two wicker chairs, a coffee table and an end table. Then we rented a panel van to drive all the stuff to Pittsburgh ( DD called it a perv van, so clever). Then we ordered a new mattress, box springs, and frame at our local Sears, but had it delivered after move-in. They brought is in and set it up; that alone was worth $100 to me. There was only $50 difference between double and queen, so we bought the bigger bed.

Once everything was in, we took an Ikea run with the van and bought a desk and those bookcase things that you can buy baskets to fit in kind of like drawers to use instead of a dresser. We probably spent about $1200 total, but the bed was $500 of that.

The good news? This year, she is just moving to an upstairs apartment and I do not have to lift a finger.

Don’t forget the renter’s insurance policy. My daughter’s apartment was burglarized today. She was not home, thank goodness, but the person took her phone, her x-box , and all of her jewelry. I had put off buying the insurance.

Oh my goodness that’s really upsetting. I’m glad she is okay. If you don’t mind me asking, what area was her apartment in and was it possibly a ground-floor apartment?

FWIW: I always suggest not renting a ground floor apartment as it can be easier to break into. If you can get a 2nd or 3rd floor without any access to the ground from the windows, that’s always better.

I am glad your daughter is OK. Your homeowner’s policy didn’t cover her apt.? I had called our insurance co. about getting a renter’s policy for son’s apt. and they said our homeowner’s policy covered his apt. He would have to get a renter’s policy once he graduated but until then it was under our policy.

I think it will be covered. We have a little company that is not open today, so I will call Monday. She is on the ground floor, but a third floor apartment was also burglarized in the same building. Someone propped the outside door open and the guy walked in and pried her door open with a crow bar.

She is in North Oakland. It was a crime of opportunity as so many are. The person was probably walking by, saw an open door. He took a pillow case off DD’s bed and started filling it.

I did get renter’s insurance. Since it is 4 guys in one house it is covered by one policy - really inexpensive. Wanted to be safe rather than sorry.

It looks like Ikea is going to be easiest way to go - I will only have 2 days in Pittsburgh so that is the quickest way to do it. Will rent a U-Haul at IKEA to bring the stuff to the house and then just put it together for the next day.

Renting a truck from NY to PITT was a fortune. So we will drive and shop there

Pittsburgh police are searching for the victims of a suspected “serial burglar” snatched in Oakland today.

Plainclothes detectives in the city’s Zone 4 station in Squirrel Hill were monitoring an area near the corner of Centre Avenue and North Craig Street this afternoon when they spotted a man attempting to sell laptops and other goods out of a car, Officer Frank Rosato said.

When detectives combed through the contents of the car, they found laptops, jewelry and other expensive goods, many separated into bags based off of where the suspected burglar had snatched them. Officer Rosato said police have been able to identify some of the burglary victims because their IDs were located with the stolen loot.

Some of the victims – police suspect there may be as many as a dozen – have already been contacted, but police are still searching for leads on the others. Some of the confirmed victims lived in the area near Alder and Spahr streets and police suspect the burglar might have pried his way into several homes.

Officer Rosato said the suspect, 36-year-old Antwone Thurston of the North Side, will likely face charges of burglary and receiving stolen property. Mr. Thurston was being interviewed at police headquarters tonight and police plan to take him to the Allegheny County Jail later today.

Officer Rosato asked anyone who thinks he or she might have been a victim to call the Zone 4 station at 412-422-6520.

Construction junction in point breeze. It’s a huge warehouse store with used furniture. Not as polished as ikea, but they do have some cool stuff.
