thank you mochabear! good luck at brown!

question. i have two options and i think one might be too risky. for inspring academic experiences, in full honesty the most influencial class has been my 8th grade history class simply because he was an AMAZING teacher and the style of teaching and questioning he taught has put me ahead in high school. but that might be too long ago and i can see how that would be frowned upon. but i dont want to write about how much the ming dynasty has influenced my life because that's just bs.

the other option is an actual class i have now, the intern mentor program, where i am learning journalism at a military base. its cool and i love it but i'd rather write about the other one because i havent had much time to have been significantly influence by the class. do you think my first option is way too risky?

It's very difficult, but not impossible, to fake being heartfelt.
The corollary to that being that it is much easier to write a good essay about something that actually means a lot to you. Hence, as long as the essay is well written and conveys just how much that 8th grade class meant to you, including the exact reasons why it did mean as much as it did, then I would suggest going with that one.

I'd suggest writing about the 8th grade experience too. Clearly it was a significantly influential class, since you still remember it now, and as long as you somehow state that it honestly really was - that would explain why you're not writing about a more current experience - I think you'll be okay. I don't see how you can go wrong with being honest.
