Hey everyone,
I was recently informed that I was invited into my school's 8th Grade High School Level Algebra 1 and Geometry Program (which I will be taking). I was wondering if anyone else had this kind of thing at their school, and could provide me with some information about it, (difficulty, workload, etc.). Thanks! :)

You really should talk to people at your school to find out what it’s like at your school. It’s not uncommon for 8th graders to take algebra1 or geometry but I’ve never heard of a program which offers two years of high school math in one year to 8th graders.

Okay, thanks for replying!

It will definitely be different at every school. A couple examples…s’16 took algebra in 7th. Everything was good, teacher was amazing.
8th grade geometry. Not good, he used khan academy to supplement. Because it was taught in a middle school, there were some middle school teaching methods. Like cross teaching other subjects. They read a dan brown book (fiction) and had to write poetry for valentines day. S hated this- he wanted math- not English. I know that high school teachers wouldn’t do this.
The other thing I tell parents is that those geometry concepts will be learned many years before the SAT And ACT and the student may need more review than if geometry was taken As a sophomore.

Oh ok, thanks! That makes sense, my school is definitely different, high school Honors Algebra is required for those placed in the “Highest Math Class”. Geometry is an elective which we get to select, in order to get ahead in high school. I wish they had something like that for us I 7th grade, it would have been more convenient. @29happymom26

In 8th grade I took Algebra 2 Honors in school and Geometry Honors online (FLVS) at the same time. It really isn’t that bad.

I took Geometry in 8th grade (and LOVED it), but I can’t imagine taking Algebra I and Geometry at the same time.
Geometry used a lot algebra that I learned the year before.

However, if your school offers it as a program, I’m sure it is doable.

Best of luck!

I’m going to be a freshman this year, but I took Algebra 1 in 8th grade. So I’m taking advanced geometry this year. Our school kind of has something like that, but it’s Algebra 2 and Precalc in 1 year.

@dreamofteaching @winter21 Thanks so much for your replies!

@dreamofteaching What concepts do your school teach that use a lot of Alg 1 ? In my school, we spent most of the time doing proofs, logic statements, and applying theorems to solve problems. Only by the end of the year do we use math and they are just multiplying numbers together. Sin Cos Tan are not cover in Alg 1 so it doesn’t really count.

@long2181998 We did proofs and logic statements at the beginning of the year, and then did some triangle business with the equations, quadratic formula, and polynomials. [I know this is a really bad description, sorry.]
My school was all about “strong algebra foundations” so we probably did more applied algebra than most geometry classes.

I took Algebra I in 8th grade, must not Geometry. They both kind of…intercross each other, as you could say. Geometry has Algebra I concepts in it, while Algebra I has Geometry concepts in it. I personally think that geometry is a little easier, but that’s my opinion. It’s a good step to take a high school class in 8th grade.

At my school you can do Pre-Algebra in 6th grade, Algebra I in 7th grade, and Geometry in 8th. So I don’t know how hard it would be to do them both at the same time but I do know that for me at least Geometry was a lot easier than Algebra I.

@dsi411 @tacoperson123 @long2181998 Thanks alot, actually I just started these two classes a few days ago, and it doesn’t seem that bad.
