spn2200: I'm saying everyone is nice and friendly and outgoing. Just because it gets hectic, and people will probably be grumpy and overstressed, doesn't mean people will start lighting each other on fire, per se. I guess my point is that lots of the students here aren't automaton nerds. As for the girls, I really have to disagree with you. While there are a bunch you won't be interested in, there are a lot of real hotties too. Granted however, it is summer, so everyone probably looks her best. I think my point is that with all the negative hype, I was expecting to go to school with 90% girls who were either ugly lacked personal hygine. Thats certainly not the case. You will not find a wasteland devoid of hotties if you come to cornell is my point.

ti83plus: check http://www.cu2nite.cornell.edu/ for nighttime events and Tahoe's link for clubs. What kinds of things are you looking for to do? It's justified to complain that theres nothing to do if cornell can't provide anything to meet a reasonable interest, but i'm just curious what it is you're looking for. For all the starry-eyed freshmen, 1000 parties a night doesn't sound so bad. and there are still the typical HS social things like movies, bowling. plus fun new stuff like gorge jumping (i mean that seriously, theres a 30'+ bridge that's quite fun!). I have a single, so yea I'm not complaining; I guess it depends on the luck of the draw. Yea, the laundry is frickin pricey, but hey, it's laundry, the overall experience outweighs that just a little bit :). as for the 2GB limit, your average student won't exceed it, and while I don't like it either, get the program DC++. you can select only to download from cornell student computers, thus avoiding any bandwidth charge at
all. hope this info is helpful to you!

I think my overall point is that the complaints people make are minor ones, but that when everyone picks on the same thing a little (like competition, girls, cold) it adds up to seem like a crisis. Look at the retention rate of cornell. It really can't be that bad, can it?

Just to reiterate as another source to what sparticus and a few others are saying: The girls are definitely not ugly or horrible at Cornell, in fact as I walk I tend to see more or at least an equal distribution of "good looking" girls to "not so good looking girls." It's not like you will be put in front of an eyesore where ever you look. On my floor there is not one ugly girl, maybe I am just lucky, I don't know. As far as things to do, I am having a hard time trying to find free time. If you want to do anything, you can find it, and if you find yourself being bored, then you aren't looking hard enough. This is one of two times today I am sitting in my dorm. The only thing that I will complain on is the laundry, it is expensive. Depending how often you do your laundry it's probably going to cost you at least 2.50 per week (one wash/dry). I don't know about the cold yet, b/c it has been so hot here :(, i was actually looking forward to the cooler weather, but I suppose it will come soon enough. I don't know how much you download, but the 2GB limit is pretty reasonable. I've downloaded a few applications so far, and I've only used one tenth of the limit in 1 week, so at this rate I will have some left over. And as Sparticus said, if you need to download get DC++, that is what most people use (personally I haven't set it up yet). With respect to hostility and competition, I don't know yet how much or little there will be, but I don't think it will be as bad as people are making it out to be. The worst case scenerio I could see myself in, is if I am swamped with work, and a friend asks me for help, and I have to tell him/her that I just can't do it b/c I am in the same boat. Also Cornell provides for free tutors if you need it, so if you find yourself needing help, and you find the people around you not willing to dish out the required time you need for that help, you always have the tutoring option available.

If you want activities, there are plenty, if you want good looking girls, there are plenty, if you want friendly people that will start a conversation with you while on line for food, there are plenty. Basically, my impression of Cornell so far is that it is great, and should be able to offer me everything that I need, and in the case that it lacks in one area, then that is only one area of the whole of Cornell.

The girls aren't that great looking and they get fat by the end of the year, but this is true across the board for all good schools.

I have to agree with shizz. This is about the best time to enjoy the girls cuz they're gonna be all covered up by the time October hits. And by next year, they've picked up the freshman 15 (or in some cases, the freshman 30...)

wow, this is why it's good to have graduates/upperclassmen on the forum

lol...um, there is no way I'd gain 15 pounds, that's a lot of weight

How is the food that I hear is so great at Cornell?

yea... its great... but the dining hall is mad crowded...

sorry for posting again... i think people should complain a little more about the school service... like my old college.. people complain a lot.. thats how they keep improving..

ti is right, RPCC (one of the two freshman campus dining halls) is mad crowded at peak hours. Appel, the other is a less crowded, though i once saw a 5-10 minute line to get in--once i was in there was not to much crowding in the food lines and plenty of seating upstairs though. The other tip is go at off hours, or try the carol tatkon cafe using your BRBs. never seen a line @ tatkon.

ahh... the BRBs... just think about how much you have and how long til the semester end...

The amount of BRBs is pretty reasonable. My meal plan is 14 meals a week and 500 BRB's, those 500 come out to around $4.34 dollars per day. So by now I should have used up around 43 dollars of my BRBs to finish the semester evenly, but I'm only at half of that.

One of the ladies at the dining hall says people rush to finish spending their BRBs at the end of the semester. It's harder than you think to spend 500 dollars on only food and drinks when you already have a meal plan with ample food.

what? it wont transfer to next year's meal plan? btw.. i dont really remember. but was the 500 BRBs required? man... seems like i am going to bring some can food home for the winter...

again... the stuff we buying are all overpriced...

I think BRB's transfer to next semester but not to the next school year. I'm always open to donations. I've bought $500 BRB every semester so far and have had to add on more every semester.

i believe norcal is right, BRB's transfer semester to semester but not year to year. I THINK that's right.

wow u guys, i'm really in love with cornell. i visited it over spring break this year, and it was an ugly day, all rainy and stuff. but i loved the campus, and all these things you guys are saying about the school make it sound like an amazing place. btw thanks for giving some of your time to talk to kids like us looking at the school. hopefully i will see u around campus next year!

When I re-visited the campus last weekend I saw a couple people just sitting by themselves. They seemed so depressed!

How is it going with meeting new people on campus? Have you guys found you group of friends yet? When did you meet most of the people...during orientation?

i'd bet they were just bored in between classes. If you can't make friends here, you wont make them at any other university. I usually eat breakfast alone ... not due to a lack of friends, but i typically get up early in the morning, go for a 30 minute bike ride, eat, then shower. It's just easier to do alone! But yeah, i probably look like a depressed loner at the dining hall. Not true however!

I met alot of people durring orientation. Classes are also a great way. It seems like orentation is where you get to know everybody, then you 'select' the people you want to be closest to. I've also met alot of people that live on the same floor as I do.

To be honest, making friends here is easy. If it's difficult for you, then you're probably a difficult person to be friends with (harsh, but true).

If anybody is going to be on campus and wants a more 'in-depth' tour than the ones that the university provides, just let me know and i can take you around. The campus is so vast and there's so much to see. Just drop me an email (dpo4@cornell.edu) if anybody is going to be around (or if anybody has any particular questions they didnt ask).
